Hi ... I got some great fresh string beans this weekend. Only problem is I have NO idea what to do with them. Any suggestions? I have kids, so nothing too fancy - they would never eat them, even though my husband and I would. Thanks!

I usually just clean 'em and steam them (or sometimes boil them). We don't season with too much other then salt and pepper.

I love them raw. When I cook them, I usually just steam them for a little while (so that they're still crunchy). I don't put anything on them (even salt or pepper), since I like them just the way they are.

I got some a couple of weeks ago from the Farmers Market and I fixed them "country style". I popped the ends off and then put them in a pot just covered with water. I added a little salt and pepper and some ham bits I had frozen from Easter. You can also use bacon if you don't have ham. Bring to a boil and then cover and simmer for about an hour.

So good!

We cooked a ham yesterday (we'd bought at Easter when they were on sale really cheap!), took it out of the pot, and put in our fresh green beans and some potatoes and let them cook...it was sooo good! Having the leftovers tonight because we are canning the rest of the beans tonight.

I also liked them just steamed or lightly cooked so they stay a little crunchy, they are really good with a bit of butter and little garlic!

We cook them up and then wait for them to cool a little and add italian dressing on them. Its a good cold side dish as well as warm.

I just bought some at the Farmers market today because dh said he would eat them. But, I have never cooked fresh vegetables before (we either eat them raw or have frozen) So this may sound like a dumb question, but how exactly do you steam them?
