We really like salad around here! I would probably eat it for lunch more often if it was handy. I like to buy a head of lettuce and wash it myelf. Especially with all the news about the bagged stuff lately, but it doesn't seem to keep so long! How should I store it to make it last the longest?

In a baggie with a few air holes. I would also buy those little discs that you put in the crisper to keep it fresher. Moreover, don't wash it first - wet deteriorates more quickly, and use it as soon as you can. I really don't like the taste of the bagged lettuces/salads and really wish the restaurants would stop using them. We went to Olive Garden today and they still do it. Many others do, too.

I wrap wey paper towels and poke small little holes into the bag. Just remember to keep watering it.

I like to keep it in a foodsaver canister, it keeps so well! I would think you'd want something airtight to prevent the oxidation (rusting) on the lettuce, at least that's what happens here if we don't vacuum seal it, it starts to rust then turns to slime in no time flat! I'd probably use a ziploc bag and try to squeeze all the air out before sealing it.

I layer a few leaves then a dry paper towel, more leaves, another dry paper towel until you have used all the leaves. I then put it in a ziplock baggie, push out as much air as possible. The dry towels soak up the water and keep the leaves from getting slimy. I"ve had mine last well over a week. I do the same with green onions, they last a while too.
