Tomorrow I'm having company for Christmas and for one day out of the year I like my house to look nice. My dh and I have been cleaning and straightening all day. Meanwhile, my dd has been begging for her friends to come over. NO! I know what they're going to do -- drag out stuff and make a big darn mess plus get in the way while I'm trying to clean. Also, my dd has seen these girls (both at our house and their house) for 4 days in a row now, so it's not like she hasn't seen these kids recently. The girls' dad doesn't want my dd to come over (probably for the same reasons I have) and now this girl is currently on the phone with my dd, crying. Well, she can cry a river for all I care because no one is coming over today.

Is it too much to ask to have a little peace and quiet and a clean house?

Nope, not too much to ask at all. Maybe next year way in advance you can tell her NO friends coming or going for X amount of days, and the day before Christmas is family day, and involve her in the decorating (and cleaning!). She'll have a heads up, and it might even become a tradition! Merry Christmas!

You have every right to have a peaceful quiet day. I would stick to my guns and get her to help out.
