UGH! My dd came home before Easter because of a significant health issue. Her primary doctors wanted her home until they could get through the specialists/testing. The school knew right away. At 20 days out, we applied for homebound instruction so she could stay within the guidelines of the school district. Her teacher has given me the basic outline of what they are covering and I am teaching her at home. Homebound was denied. I talked to the doctors about it. They weren't thrilled but felt it would be okay. So I called to tell the school and they inform me that she can't go back in her regular classroom because she has missed too many days (Translation, it is a standardized test taking year and their scores might be in jeopardy) and she would be placed at a new school in a new class for students who are emotionally disabled or troubled!!!
If I homeschool her for the rest of the year, she will be ineligible for the gifted program next year. I am livid angry right now.

no way! I would fight it to the bitter end, she does not belong at that school. I would fight it with all the points made here, thats not fair. Its not her fault or yours she got sick. She can't be denied a good education because of it.

Go straight to the School Board!

Take all of the documents where the Dr. suggested that she stay home till further testing could be done. Then take any correspondence or documents from the school, where they knew this and agreed to it.

In some states, and AL is one of them, the school system has to provide home bound teaching if it is recommended by a Dr. So if your state is one that has provisions for this, and it was denied, make sure that they know that was illegal. Just Google your states guide to home bound teaching.

Sounds to me, like they really don't want to be bother to help you, and are trying to make it easier on themselves.

That doesn't seem very fair at all! I agree with the other ladies -- fight it!

I would go straight to the superintendent. Take all your paperwork from the Dr. and any other information you have.

Don't take it local, it will take way too much time. Go straight to your state education governing body. Ours is called TEA, Texas Education Agency. I have seen parents call from their cell phones to TEA and while they are on the phone, TEA phones the head office and tells them what for.

I would homeschool her, I know how many problems you have been having all year. I'm so sorry you have to go through this on top of everything else!!

I almost would not WANT her back at that school, and might go the homeschooling route. But if that isn't something you want to do, then fight it... go to the superintendent first I say.
