I think my 10 year old dd is getting breasts!

Last weekend, my dd complained that her right nipple was bothering her. I checked it and didn't really see/feel anything. Today she again complained that it was bothering her so I checked it and I felt a hard knot underneath. Is this a breast forming? The left nipple doesn't have a knot at all. Is it normal for one to start developing before another?

From what I recall, there was initially 'poofing' up of the nipple.. no knots of any sort I remember. If she was mine, we'd schedule an appointment for a checkup. Better safe than sorry and that doesn't sound 'normal/typical' to me

In some people this is normal. Your DD is at the age. Call the ped and ask or make an appt if you want.

Does the knot hurt? I don't remember bumps or knots, but I remember my chest/breast hurting like heck for about 2-3 months before they started growing. It was about the 5th grade, so I guess about 10 as well.

My pediatrician just spoke to me about this (my daughter is 8 - she was just giving me a heads up what to look for in the future). She said they are called "breast buds" and can feel like a hard lump under the nipple. She said the child sometimes has pain, sometimes not, but wanted to tell me, because parents worry that it's a tumor or something. HTH.

Call your pediatrician...but if I remember correctly, breast size varies from one side to another..that's very normal for everyone, so it would only make sense that one might start developing a little earlier than the other.

Thanks. A friend of mine also mentioned the same thing to me, so I explained to my dd what was happening.

I'm so not ready for this.

I'd get her her first bra right away to stop the rubbing that can make it even more painful. You can make it a special girl's day out and teach her about it, along w/little tips on how to put it on easier.

Hopefully she's not in the habit of being a tummy sleeper. Ouch!
