I really am not pro or con homeschooling. Whatever works for you is good for me. But I was just wondering, for those that do homeschool: Why did you decide to homeschool. What prompted your decision?

I never expected to be a home schooler. Both DH and I have strong education back ground, have worked in and with our school district, fully support our school district, and have a lot of friends that work with the school district now.

But, when it came to actually having our child educated by our public school system ... it came down to we felt our DD would do best at home. Her personality, her temperament, we just felt better with her remaining at home at least for now. Now that may change and we plan on re-evaluating it every year and when it comes to decide for our son.

I do it for many reasons. Some of my reasons may not be popular. Just for the record I have one learning disabled child in public school because I ran out of ideas on how to teach her so she's in a special class, and I supplement at home and my two oldest daughters have decided to do their last few years in public school to make it easier to get into college. (one graduated last year). However I won't allow any of the other children to do this because the downsides ended up outweighing the benefits.

1. I don't think public schools teach a child what they really need to know in life.

2. For religious reasons.

3. I think schools are too crowded, so the teachers are not able to teach each child in the individual way they need. (not at all the teacher's fault, I highly admire teachers)

4. I actually love being around my kids all day and can't imagine sending all of them away all day. IMO Why bother being a mother if I let a school raise them?

5. I think public schools are mainly places to indoctrinate good little goose stepping patriots.

I had always wanted to homeschool, but it ended up being a necessity for my oldest, who has Tourettes. The torment and abuse he endured from students and teachers in the short time he was in public school was unacceptable. So I continued homeschooling all of my children.

We never intended to homeschool either. My dss started kindergarten and the first week they said he would have to be on medication for ADHD. At this point he is one of those kids just being passed on so they don't have to deal with him. He is in 5th grade and can't tell time unless he has a digital clock and he has trouble reading children's books.
I don't want my kids to be in that situation.
I agree with ZooNana, I love having them home with me too. I can work on things that they have problems with and move on when they understand something. The teachers in public school can't always do that.

I'm a teacher by profession.

Our district was having MAJOR cuts, of COURSE. I felt there wasn't enough supervision on campus as it was. *I was able to be there a LOT though last year and HER teachers were awesome* I can't imagine the lack of supervision there'll be with fewer adults on campus.

I found out some things that WERE NOT covered in first grade where she would attend.

I LOVE the idea of having 'extra time',, me having that with her, and her having that for EXTRAS,, enrichment,, EXPERIMENTS . The fun things you run out of time for in public classrooms.

I'll get to teach the BEST one,, specifically to ONE child.

I don't think any mom here sends her kids to school so they can be raised there. We all love our children and being around them.

I agree that there are public schools that are not up to par, and ours is one of them. That is why our boys go to private school. But there are many excellent public schools out there that produce very intellegent well rounded kids.
