What are you guys doing to keep your kids healthy as they go back to school? There are so many bugs and viruses going around these days, and the flu bug can live all year round. Do you have anything special on your back-to-school shopping lists?

I gave my son a purse size (mini) bottle of anti bacterial lotion (which I can refill from home when needed) and asked him to use it before and after he eats. I also asked him to use it after indoor and outdoor play. He keeps it in his desk

There are anti bacterial wipes available too if the lotion isn't what would work for you.

Really I have never done anything special. My kids have never really been very sick either. They just do the basic handwashing at school. Also, our schools have large bottles of hand sanitizer available for the kids to use at any time.

I never did anything special with M'ija - just told her to use common sense. Wash her hands before eating and after using the bathroom or wiping her nose. Stay away from people who are constantly coughing or sneezing. Sent oj in her lunch instead of milk during cold season for the extra vitamin c. Fed her a decent diet.

Dh works at a middle school and ds starts preschool soon, plus all our other activities. When ds gets home from preschool/activity and when dh gets home from school, they immediately change clothes and wash their face and hands. We have all become used to using antibacterial gel on our hands after playing at the park or using a public bathroom.

It may seem a little much, but we're being extra cautious this year. I'm pregnant and do not plan on getting the swine flu vaccine or giving it to ds or the new babe. So, we are being extra careful to keep flu germs out of the house.

Apparently not enough. We went all summer without one cold and she already has a cold. School started last week for us.

Hand washing and not sharing food/drinks.

Make sure they know when they drink out of the drinking fountain not to put their mouth directly on it.

We just teach them good handwashing and to keep their hands away from their mouth and eyes.

I've got them in the habit of washing hands before eating, after bathroom, etc.; unfortunately, they still get colds. It's a way to build their immune system, or so I've heard. I remember in the "good ole days" people were way more careless with hygiene, and yet here we are.

I am always reminding them to wash their hands before and after they do anything. I have antibacterial wipes for when we are on the go. I wipe down all the handles, door knobs and light switches in the house every day at home.

our school has sinks and wash stations in the class rooms so the kids wash their hands before and after lunch plus my kids wash their hands when they get home from school and come into the house.
