DD carried a backpack forever 'til she won a cute tote bag from school. She carries that around now and it's ok, since she doesn't have many things to carry around. DS has a backpack.

My 1st grader has a backpack but she went through a phase of wanting to carry a tote bag last year. She realized the backpack was easier to use.

My preschooler has a tote bag.

Both kids have L.L. Bean backpacks that we bought new this school year. So far, they really like them!

traditional backpack w/ favorite character-
They were expensive this year! $12-$17/ each @ Target = (

I refuse to buy them from Walmart. Although cheap, last year I bought 3 for my son. The zippers kept breaking.
