I found this recipe for your own sidewalk chalk. I think I am going to start saving my toilet paper tubes and actually use them for something. So here it is:

2 qts. plaster of Paris
food colors
water
Mix plaster of Paris with 1 quart water. Mix in desired color. Pour into paper towel or toilet paper tubes (about 3 inches high) with one end taped off to make a cup. Let dry thoroughly (This may take several days). Remove from tubes and let the kids draw away.

here's another one--

mix 1/4 cup dry cornstarch with a couple drops food coloring. mix well--it should stay dry but the color should mix around. let sit out until it dries thouroughly.store in a ziploc bag.

when you are ready to use it, put it in a plastic cup (i use washed applesauce cups) and mix with 1/4 cup room temp water. mix well. get a cheap, disposable wooden paintbrush and use liquid chalk as paint on sidewalks. as it dries, it will turn to chalk. wash away with the hose or wait until it rains.
