OK so my DD,11 came home from spending the summer at her dad's and when we pick her up he tells me that she had lice but they washed her hair out 3 times with lice shampoo and the last time they did it was 2 weeks ago which was the follow-up shampoo. This of course makes me so mad as this isn't the first time this has happened (long story). So I am very diligent and check through her hair for a week and see nothing. I also carefully wash and bag up all of her stuff she brought home. She does have hair that is hard to see but I checked very hard. Then yesterday she has a head full of them, which is 2 weeks later. So I did the shampoo and cleaning and checked again tonight and nothing.
Does anyone have any other ideas or home-remedies to get rid of them. I checked my DS head and my DH and see nothing, my DH said nothing is in my hair, would you treat anyway? I would hate to treat my 18 month old, he has very fine hair and I don't see anything. I have been through this with my DD several times before but I am always looking for other ideas on how to get rid of them besides the awful shampoo.

Someone wrote as a tip one time the mayonaise kills lice. I don't know how or how much but just remember they wrote it. If it were me, I would probably treat everyone but the 18 month with the shampoo.

I would check with the pediatrician for the latest. There are many things out there and some are supposed to kill the eggs, too. Keep in mind, though, that although the chances are higher, your entire family may not get the lice. When I was little, my sister and I shared a bed and a pillow. She got lice, and I didn't. I wouldn't treat the others until you see some show up. Good luck. Those things are so nasty. Wish they could find a way to eradicate them for good.

NOTHING worked for us when my dd had them. No one else got them, thank goodness, but it finally took a prescription shampoo...that you can only use once a year or risk BRAIN DAMAGE to get rid of!!!! We fought it for weeks and weeks, though, and her dr. said it was time to call in the big stuff. Of the home remedies, we did: mayo with a showercap on to sleep in, listerine washes, every shampoo WalMart carried for the stuff, having her lay in the tub with her head under water for hours..supposed to drown them, if we heard about it helping, we tried it....and we didn't treat our youngest two..but we DID end up getting both boys a very close to the head haircut.
I sure hope yours gets gone quick. It is awful to deal with.

you can also try a vinegar rinse as well. after the mayo. look up all natural ways to get rid of lice online. if you had to do the babies hair i would do the mayo, or vaseline. that sufcates them. and to get the vaseline out you will need cornstarch and you put that ion the vaseline and then comb it out and do that until you get as much of the vaseline out as possible and then you wash it out until the rest comes out.

vegetable oil all through her hair might work too.. I tried mayonnaise and so did my friend.. it worked for her.

I used tea tree oil shampoo on my kids last summer and that was the thing that helped. Keep sweeping the couch, chairs, bed pillows...anything that cannot be washed. If the lice fall off the head, they can't live longer than 24-48 hours..so keep sweeping..

Wash everything that can be washed, in HOT water and then dry on the hottest setting for at least 15 minutes.

I really feel for you.. it took me months to get rid of.... in fact, we got rid of them and then 3 months later, the lice were back and worse! So good luck!

Thanks for the ideas I have tried the mayo but usually just use the shampoo. The only half-way good thing about this (if there is one) is that my house gets a mega cleaning and stays clean for a few weeks.

Olive oil and A shower cap and comb through before washing and after. repeat in a week and if you comb good enough they should all be gone. we had a serious problem with my daughter from 2 of her friends about 2 years ag and this is all that worked for me.

We went through this for 4 LONG YEARS! My dsd had them and kept bringing them over. I found something online about coconut shampoo, worked like a charm. After she went home and I treated the whole house I started washing all of our hair in it. We never got it again even though dsd still had it when she came over. Also years later my youngest was going to a preschool she no longer attends and was bringing them home. I would spend a hour or more combing through her hair to get everything out and then we would treat with the rid or whatever and from then on only the coconut shampoo and we never saw anymore.
I am just glad I like coconut scent! HTH
