Pavement

We didn't use training wheels because I think they can really hinder a child's ability to learn to balance etc

Both my kids learned really quickly, party due to riding those razor scooters and skateboards, they had the balance thing down before they tried riding a bike.

Pavement

Wouldn't it be harder to get going and steer straight on the grass?

pavement-

I was taught using grass and I was telling my dh to go to the park and use the grass- he did once and the grass was too high and my ds could not turn his bike.

We used my younger ds bike so it was lower to the ground and he felt comfortable with being able to put his feet on the ground when he felt like he was going to fall- We also let the small bike to a friend this summer so her don could learn and he did really fast wiht the smaller bike- my want to try that

Well, my boys have not really had an interest in learning to ride their bikes. My 8 yr old is finally trying. He was learning on the street, but then they laid down the rock to seal our street, so it is hard to ride on so he has been practicing in our back yard.

I just think it is odd that my boys are 6, 7 & 8 and really have no desire to ride bikes.

Happymom, you have made ME happy!! My ds, 4.5 rides his trike, once in awhile, he has no desire to get/ride a bike. None. He's not afraid, he just has no interest. Come to think of it, *I* had absolutely no interest either, and finally when I was 10 or so my parents got me a bike and insisted I ride it. I did, but wasn't crazy about it, I used it mostly off for two years and then scrapped the thing. I've never been on since, and it never hurt me any!! :D But I was happy to hear it wasn't only ds too!!

Pavement.

Since we're sharing - My first son learned to ride on a weekend at his dad's somehow. And the 2nd learned in, literally, 30 minutes of being with his step-sister outside in the road. I tried teaching him myself, and I guess I just didn't have that, "learn to ride if you want to come around the block with me" vibe going on.

I had just talked to my dh about teaching Caleb to ride his bike without training wheels , and told him he could take him to the park where they have a nice huge, flat area that would be great. Well that is when he told me he was going to teach him on pavement and just the thought of it terrified me. Can you tell I am an overprotective parent?? Anyway I wanted to hear from you ladies. I told my dh I was going to ask my mommysaver friends and he said oh don't ask a bunch of moms they don't know anything about raising boys! I said oh they'll just love that comment! So it does seem from the replies that some do learn on the pavement and I haven't heard any horror stories so hopefully when my dh works with him he will not get hurt.

My dd is learning now on the pavement, shes having a horrible time with the peddles but if you push her she does steer in the right direction.
