I remember developing a sweet tooth at that age. I think it had to do with hormones, stress and opportunity.

One note on your parents. Mine are far away, but you could take a similar stance (not being allowed around your dd unless they behave - put them in timeout). But when my diva was a baby, she was exclusively breastfed and oh, so chunky! Looking back at those pictures, I felt so bad for her! We found out she was anemic, and shortly after we put her on Dr. prescribed iron drops she started losing and her eyes got huge and wide open. She had no energy.

Anyway, when we would send pictures to the parents, they commented on her chubbiness. I told them flat out that the Dr. wasn't concerned (at that point, he was just before the blood tests were done), and if they criticized her pictures, I wouldn't send anymore. And I didn't.

Now that she's 2, almost 3, she's lost a lot and is average - not chunky at all, but healthy looking - no folds like as a baby. I sent pics to my family and they were aghast. But especially with having a Special Needs son that they don't understand and don't do research on, I just drew boundaries to protect my kids. Just because they are our parents doesn't give them the right to criticize. Criticism isn't motivating.

My 12 y/o DS (willbe 13 in August) is overweight. His weight is due to a medical condition and meds. However, he is very good at reading labels. At our house, we follow the 80/20 rule. We eat healthy 80% of the time and have treats the other 20%. My DS feels seriously deprived if he thinks he can't have a can of 7-Up or a grilled cheese sandwich. So, he's allowed himself one softdrink a week. And he pays close attentio to food with no nutritional value and limits himself on them. All his closest friends are very lean and go shirtless when playing football or playing outside. So I can def. relate to all the peer pressure.

i would not encourage my child to ever diet, but instead to change her eating habits. also, if your daughter is very active and at the top of the charts, how much weight could she have gained? what is "a bit of weight"? if she does not want to lose the weight, and she is extremely physically active, why do you want her to lose it? it will fall off naturally if she keeps up her activities, and the last thing you should want to do is have your daughter thinking that "food" is the enemy and she "MUST" be skinny!

i am worried about my oldest DD's weight, but that's because she is clinically obese for her age. it is hard to keep her from pigging out--even on healthy things, and i do not want to teach her to hate food. so it's been a struggle. also, because of where we live, it's hard for them to get out alot and play. this is why i want to move so badly.

but for now, we take it day by day. i am taking her to her doctor next week, and requesting a nutritionist for her. i also want to go to my doctor and request one for me.
