The reason I ask is because I just called a family that had their DS(6) leave a message on their machine, it was very cute. BUT, another family that I called a few weeks ago had their DS(8) leave their message and you could only understand about 2 words that the kid said. And both messages gave out the family's name and even the kids names.

I don't let my DS(6) do this because I don't like giving out that much info, I just say "sorry we can't come to the phone right now, please leave a message" If its a wrong # "oh well" IMO. If its someone we know then they can leave a msg. or call back. I also am a bit paranoid about freaky people calling my # and then knowing my name or my ds's, I mean, what if its a pediphile or kidnapper??!! I guess I'm getting overly paranoid!!!

What do you all think about this??

I agree with you. We do not let the kids leave a message and when I leave one it says mine and dh's first names. I have read too many stories about freaky kidnappings to do that!

Nope...Dh and I don't even record one of our voices, we use the mechanical voice from our voicemail that just says "123-456-7890 is not available - please leave a message".

Kids on the answering machine is just not appropriate for our household. Dh receives a lot of calls from work and even if he didn't, we wouldn't do it. I'm sure the folks that do it think it's cute or whatever, Dh and I think it's silly. To each their own.

with OP, I find it silly. Both dh and I get calls at home from work and it just isn't professional, imho.

I have our last name included in ours, but only because we are one digit off from the number for Planned Parenthood and people were leaving messages about needing to change their appointments or get their test results...

It may be silly to some but we think it's cute and therefore let our kids record the outgoing message on our machine. We DO NOT put our names on there, just say sorry we can't come to the phone and to please leave us a message. We don't see anything wrong or inappropriate about our kids leaving the message and they can be understood easily or we wouldn't let them. To each their own . . .

Years ago when I was single, I always got my brother, uncle or another male relative, tape the message for the machine.

After all, with all of the weird people out there, you can't never be too careful!

We all use cells so each of us makes our own message. I do have to call customer's phone numbers alot at work and my only issue with kids making the message is if the child is too young, I cannot understand if I have the right number. Unfortunatly, the younger the child and more filled with "baby-talk" the cuter some people think it is. DS is 18 and STILL cannot talk clearly enough for his answering service All I hear is "Hi, this is blah blah mumble mumble call you later" At least this time he shortend it, before he told everyone of his friends hi during the message and used up so much room there was no room to leave a message!

Nope! Nobody needs to know I have sweet, precious (most of the time) children at home. We just leave our last name and phone number and say we can't get to the phone now. We leave our last name because the person who had our phone number before us apparently had debt issues. We were getting calls from all types of collectors!

We use the generic message that came with the phone. We don't like to even have our names on it.
