I want to get ds involved in some sort of a fall/winter sport. He had previously taken ice skating and then said he wanted to do hockey this year, but I just asked him recently and he said he had no interest

Dh used to co Curling in Canada and here on the East side of Cleveland, but now that we're on the West side there are no Curling clubs around here that we wouldn't have to do (more) east side driving.

I'm not actually looking for something outside, but any sportsy thing to do in the fall/winter. Ds and I are totally not into sports, and truth be told I don't think ds will excel in them but I want to give him the option!

I was thinking Tae Kwon Do, but then read somewhere that it was better to start that at 8. I don't know if ds would be into hitting and kicking other kids either, I don't think he'd understand What self defense was anyway.

Any suggestions?

TaeKwon Do is wonderful. My kids started at 4 and did great. My boys are very into wrestling as a winter sport. It is great because they are only paired with kids their own size. They love it.

The Y offers indoor soccer and basketball for kids that age around here, My son did both and really enjoyed it.

What about competative swimming? Fall/winter is the short course season. There are lot of great swim teams in the Cleveland area...your child will need to be able to swim (even with bad form) one lap. Just depends on the particular team though. A lot of teams allow you to 'try out' the team for a week or two, to see if your child is really interested, before paying/registering.

my boys started taekwondo in april and both love it our school did not take kids younger than 5 but agreed to take my son who was 3 1/2 at the time.. they have since added a younger age 4 group since my son did so well they just go at a different time.. we go to a school that is more about the art of taekwondo then competitons(though they do compete but its your choice if its something you want to do) at our school you don't make contact with people doing kicks and stuff until you are a higher rank belt they use kick boards dummies and the little kids kick sqweekers with their feet.. call around if he thinks he might be interested and take a trial class(a reputible place offers this for free). our ped recomended it for my oldest to help build his confidence and be involved in something since he is not a sports kinda kid.

Basketball is usually the first fall sport. This year DD is taking cheer so she'll miss it. Of course, if girls are doing cheerleading, that means the boys are doing football. I don't know what age football starts for boys.

After cheerleading, DD and a friend are doing snowboarding. A couple of years ago she took ski lessons and loved it.

After the fall sport, we take a break then DD does softball in the spring. This summer DD is taking golf.

I also agree that winter is the best time for indoor swim lessons.

Soccer is always good, especially for younger kids. I'd steer away from hockey, it's expensive.

Is Atlanta still on the radar, Stormy? If so, everyone plays soccer or baseball in the fall and basketball or indoor soccer in the winter. My ds has tried it all and always enjoys what he is doing, whether it is inline skating lessons or swimming lessons (I also agree that tackling the swimming in the winter is a great time to get that done) or just soccer or basketball through the church league. He is almost 8 and still hasn't focused in on one particular sport that he loves the most. He is not really into practicing yet. Just offer up a variety of activities - not necessarily traditional sports - and see what interests him. You may be surprised!
