DS took Karate at age 5. He wants to take it again now at 8. What is the difference between Tae Kwan Do and Karate? I want him into whatever would help him with self control and boost his confidence.

One is Korean and one is Japanese...that is the extent of my knowledge. LOL You might just go to a few places and talk to the instructors.

I found this though:

This is your best bet. As a martial artist, I can tell you there is a lot of variance in schools even though they say they teach the same discipline. Disciplines evolve through different lines of leadership. So karate taught by one group may be quite different than karate taught by another group because they each were taught in a different line of teachers (senseis, masters, etc.)

i also agree you need to go check out the schools we found a taekwondo academy that we love i did visit a couple others and was not impressed with a few. one even had a big incident where almost all the students have left our acedemy has gained over a dozen students from one major incident so i'm happy i did not pick that one...

Ask to observe a class, too, if you have the time. You can tell a lot by watching the student/teacher interaction. Our school offers the first class free to potential students!

You want to be sure and ask about class dues, organization fees (in case the school requires its students to belong to a national organization), uniform costs, test fees (if they test for higher ranks/new belts), equipment costs (sparring gear can pretty expensive). Also, if the school participates in any tournaments, there may be tournament fees. HTH
