Do you let your kids pick out a new backback every year for school even if the previous one is still ok?

Oh gosh no! LOL! They both have backpacks from many years ago...we don't do any "character" clothing/backpacks etc It's just not something my kids have ever been interested in...so they're fine with solid colors.

So my younger son is still using his backpack from Kindergarten (he just finished 4th grade), it's from LLBean and it's green. My older was using his backpack from Kindergarten (also from LLBean) and it was blue...up until last year, when he wanted a different style. He had been using it for 8 years, so I was fine with that! He got one from North Face.

Backpacks and lunch boxes...I'm happy to pay more to have it last and we've really lucked out with LandsEnd and LLBean. Their stuff wears like iron and they have fantastic customer service.

Last year we got my ds all new, but, it was for Kindergarden, then of course 2 months after school started the "Lightning McQueen" backpack's zipper broke, so I went to Walmart and got a plain blue one that my ds loves!! He'll be using that and last years lunchbox till they wear out!!

***Thanks for the info in LLBean & LandsEnd, Oregano, I'll keep them in mind next time I need to replace ds's stuff!!

Yes. I don't invest heavily in back to school clothing so the new backpack is the substitute.

Last year I told them the book bag they get is going to stay with them for several years. We got black book bags last year and we put patches on them from places they visit or if stores that have them.

It gets to be too expensive to keep buying them.

It is the kids choice if they want a new one or not, usually my DS will need one because the zipper will break, but my DD usually uses hers from the year before.

No, they always last at least a couple of years.

DS's backpack was NEVER ok. He would go through 2 or 3 every year. I finally got smart and stocked up while they were on sale.
DD did not like them so after she started middle school she stopped using them. She has an old one for sleepovers but that is it.
