My boys take tennis lessons, but so far, they have a loooooong way to go! There is a tennis tournament coming up for ages 9 & up. My 9 & 10 yr olds want to play. It is only $5 a person, but I am realitively certain they are going to get creamed I am thinking it would be good for them to compete anyway. What would you do? Would you sign them up? I guess I can pray that the other kids are just as bad

I think I'd sign them up.

Do they know they're 'beginners'? or do they think they're great? Might need to discuss expectations if they're convinced they're stars

Hopefully, the tounament will have other beginners and they get a good 'feel' for competition anyway.

I agree with Mrs. Teeeee. My son thinks he's great at a couple of things because we and his teachers have told him what a great job he does, but in comparison, he's not that good, but it's good for him.

But heck, if they want to, why not? Losing is still learning, and they may surprise you - and themselves!

Well, I am sure there will be others from their tennis lessons there. They are about average in the lessons, but there will also be others from the National Junior Tennis League there!!!

Just as long as they know everything that is involved and know that there will be some realy good players there..... I don't see what it could hurt. I think that a few losses makes a good player.

If they want to, I'd let them. My kids did that tennis thingy you're talking about through the parks dept and they played and were clobbered on a regular basis

Sign them up. Yes, there will be some really good players there that have been playing since they could walk but there also will be beginners as well. Tennis is a sport, in my experience, that they're always just happy to have more people join. And, unlike so many youth sports, it is something they can play their entire lives!

We're big on tennis in our household ... maybe we should start going again!
