Sharing school supplies.

My dd is starting Kindergarten this year and apparently they are sharing supplies because I need to buy several boxes of crayons & pencils and take them to back to school night. My biggest problem with this is germs. My 2nd problem with this is my dd using made in China stuff. I wish they would've specified Crayola crayons. In my opinion, you shouldn't even bother with the store brand or Rose Art crayons. They crumble and are a mess. I know I'm a spoiled mom.

Okay, I am just going to say this and I don't mean it to sound offensive, but "are you kidding me?" Seriously, the kids will be sharing so many things in school that you are afraid of germs on crayons? Our kindergarden has every parent bring in Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer, perhaps you could consider sending those to school. As for the crayons made in china, you have little to worry about there. Those crayons don't color well and kids won't even use them if given a choice. Use your energy to worry about more serious things

My kids also share supplies with the class. I don't worry about germs because I don't find that my kids get sick a lot during the school year. It's a very small private school with about 200 kids and most parents won't send their kids to school if they are sick.

How can you preface "Are you kidding me" with I don't mean to sound offensive? Anyway...
Please let me worry about my energy.. thanks!!
I do think it is a valid concern.

I wish that was the case. At my dd's Montessori preschool, she was sick at least once a month. Parents sent their children to school sick, a lot. The children shared all of the works and she was always sick. I was hoping it would be better this year.

I agree that it is really doubtful your child will get sick from sharing supplies. Those little kids will be in close contact all the time anyway. If one gets sick chances are that others will too, whether they share supplies or not. I doubt that they will get sick from using a pencil made in China either. Try to relax and enjoy the kindergarten experience.

It's not uncommon for there to be "shared supplies" nowadays and yes germs can be an issue. Since it's not likely that you could ask the teacher if dd could have her own supplies my suggestion would be to tell your dd that if possible to wash her hands after they do coloring activites. All of our elementary classes have a sink in the room. Frequent handwashing can be very effective

I completely admit to being a germaphobe. However, I didn't expect to be jumped on for having an opinion for not wanting to share supplies.
Of course the kids won't get sick from Chinese school supplies, lead paint, plastic leaching or asbestos, silly me.
I need to get off here for the day.
Thanks for your opinions.

I have always thought you would end up homeschooling, I can't believe she's going to K already!

Skimommy, I think everyone tried to be nice here. No one was "jumping on" you. I know this is just a touchy subject for you. My kids have on been sick once in the last year and I dread going through regular illnesses this year, after Bob goes to preschool, but I know we know it's expected. Our kids are going to be exposed to all that stuff, even if we try to control it when we are around them. I guess it makes me feel better to think that I was exposed to all that crap and I'm still here. Doesn't mean I'm going to try to limit it as much as possible, but when the kids are away from me, there is nothing I can do, really.
