My DD is only 2, but my nephew is 5 and starting Kindergarden this year. I was asked if I could watch him before and after school and make sure he gets to school and pick him up 4 days a week. My SIL would be putting him in the school just a few blocks from home so it would be walking him.
Not to go into details but we have had a falling out with this SIL before over family, money, taxes and watching the nephew. (I was providing dirt cheep daycare for her at the rate of $12.50 a day)
So I don't want to be walked over with doing it for nothing and don't want to way over charge her. Doing this will mean that I am tied to being home to drop him off and pick him up and that I will need to change my DDs nap schedule.

So my question is what would or do you pay to have your child watched for a few hours before and after school?

TIA

i'm not sure what a rate would be but i would suggest asking if she expects you to watch him on inservice days and school breaks if so i would make sure you are getting paid enough to cover your time and expenses.

I paid $10 a day for DD to go to daycare after school. About 2 hours a day (my other kids were at the same place) - that's also what the school charged for latchkey. I agree with brensmom though, make sure you know if you are needed on the no-school days and if so, set a price for that too, before hand. Since you've indicated problems in the past, it might be a good idea to put it all in writing too.

Yeah I was thinking $5 for before and $5 for after and $5 for any extra time for a max of $15 a day. He has a older sister (17 years) so most non school days he would just stay home. Have a stipulation of I am not taking him home on a regular basis and they need to supply me with snacks. Jordy is a snacker. But really my main job would be walking him the two block too and from school. The hardest thing will be adjusting DDs naps so she takes hers earlier.
We had problems they were regaurding taxes (her wanting to claim a tax credit) Me not wanting to have to claim it as income when I was doing her a favor providing child care for less then she could find it elsewhere. In the end she claimed it and I claimed my self as self employed to take some deductions to even things out. It all ended with my DH telling her off. No regrets they where things that needed to be said and I was happy for him finally standing up to his sister.
I agree that we need to get things in writing but my DH is concerned that his sister will think we are nickle and diming them.

I would charge 10 per morning and then again per afternoon. Or at least 15 per day. You have to consider that this is a big deal for your family (having to change a nap schedule) and school drop offs and pick ups aren't the worst thing in the world, but they can be taxing too (especially if you are at all frustrated by the upheaval of your schedule) plus...are you going to be feeding him breakfast & snacks afterschool? consider that into your cost as well. It is easy to lose money doing childcare, especially when you are trying to do a family member or friend a favor. Plus your SIL has the security of knowing that her child is being watched by someone who loves him.

I remember this happening. Your rates of $5 before and $5 after are what is the going rate around here.

However, I'm not sure it will be worth it, even for $10 a day, $50 a week to deal with this SIL who will treat it likes it's a huge inconvenience to pay you and make it seem like she's the one doing you the favor. Especially on top of the drop offs and pick ups and changing your family's schedule. I might consider it if you were thinking of taking on a few kids but that's a huge commitment and not much money for one kid. Now if you absolutely adore this kid and he plays well with your dd and you don't mind the hassle of SIL, then go for it. Otherwise, I'd pass on this one .. even if it meant watching another kid to bring in some extra money, perhaps someone your dd's age on the same schedule who could be a play mate.

Yeah Jordy is such a good kid for the most part and he has been passed between relitives for his whole life. My dd and him are exactly 3 years apart and get along great. Actually, I can do more when he is here because DD has someone to play with. For now my SIL is fine with 5 in the morning 5 in the afternoon and 5 for any additional time. Might pass but with my CC debt not getting any smaller anything extra helps.
I look at it as being healthy for me too as I will be walking him to and from school. Its just on the next block.

Thank you for your advice I feel I gave her a low number but not completly unheard of. I am hoping it will go well. I have missed not watching him after the 4 months I had him last year.

The after school program at my son's school charges $18/day. At the schools in the next town over it's about $25/day.

I probably would ask $20/day if it were my daycare.

You have to make it worth your while or you will get burned out quickly.
