Ds is on Augmenten (sp?) for strep throat. He started it Monday and has six days left of it.

It is making him super hyper-active and awful! He is normally very calm and these past few days he has been a bear and intolerable to live with! Yesterday we went to the beach for him to work off the excess energy he has because of this med. He dug on the beach like a dog for 20 minutes, then kicked the sand in rage with his foot for 10 more minutes. It was like he was possessed!

Then I ask him to get me something, and he'll be like, "That will be a dollar!" This is not his personality at all.

Should I call and see if they will change his prescription? This happened the last time he was on it but I forgot when they prescribed it to him this time. We have six more days of this, and he tells me he feels like he is jumping out of his skin.

I have to add here that ds is sensitive to food dyes as well. I'm wondering if it is not the med. itself but the dye. I looked up side effects for this med. and hyperactivity was hardly mentioned.

He's been on Amoxicillian and never had this reaction before. That was dyed too, though.

I just hate to call because it always seems like I'm telling the Dr.'s their business. Some are pretty good but others come off with the "I'm the Doctor" attitude.

Edited to add: I just checked his med. and there are no dyes in it. Hmmmmm

I woudn't worry about it at all. Your his mom and you have every right to call if you have a concern. If they get snooty then so be it. They will get over it!

Update: I did call and the Dr. wanted to see him again. He does have white patchy spots on his tonsils, but they took a 2nd strep test and it was negative (again).

She took him off the meds, which I incorrectly stated was Augmenten. It was Omnicef (sp) She said since it was negative the 2nd time around she was just taking him off of it and it may take 48 hours for the hyperactivity to stop. She said it was either strep or a virus but I do question this, since I have had "throat infections" before and it wasn't strep either. Is is that cut and dried? Strep or definite virus? I don't know!

Ds, though, is playing into it and even though *I* think he is better, he is acting crazy This is a tough age (6.5) because they now are 'dialed in' and like I said, he knows I called about the hyperactivity, and now is acting out. So I even though I see some signs of the hyperactivity, it's sort of hard to tell!

Yikes! I'm so glad this week is over.
