I work in the cafeteria at my girls school as well. There are a few parents who come in during the week and we haven't had any problems with it at all. As a matter of fact, once a month we have what is called "Family Lunch Friday" where parents are encouraged to come and bring a picnic lunch to share with their child. The kids have so much fun and often times if there is a freind whose parents can't come they will sit with their their friends parents. The only thing we have found that is a drawback is when a parent says they will come and then they don't for whatever reason, tehn we have a very upset child, which is hard, but we try to find someone for them to hang out with.

Dh and I have gone in to have lunch with them several times and we have never noticed it to be disruptive. The kids are very well behaved because that is what's expected of them everyday.

I think ds's eyes would pop out of his head if I turned up for lunch It would never happen at his school and unless it was a special thing where ALL the parents were there as well, I don't think he'd be too keen on me there, anyway! And he's in first grade!

[quote=Oregano;780018] I'm very active in my kids schools, and always have been but the whole parents showing up for lunch thing baffles me to be honest.

Your school must Be Pretty Much Like Ours!
There is Nothing Disruptive About It When We Go in either. The Kids Love it , there is Plenty of Room and The Teachers are happy that You are there to See your Child. There are even extra tables to Use if needed. Our Lunch And Recess is A Real Break for the Kids - so Its Not Like its a strict Routine , That any Parent can Really Mess up.
I Think going in every day Is a little Excessive - But NEVER being Allowed to Go in , or Never Going in , that seems To baffle me. - It is so Normal to Do Around Here.

I do it once every other week or so. Right now they LIKE to have me eat with them, even beg for it if I am in class helping out, so I take advantage of that while I can!!!

Right now I always eat with my 3rd graders class. It is part of my job as an Educational Assistant in his classroom! I rarely sit with him though! I have never seen a parent in our lunchroom. I am pretty sure they would not be turned away, it is just not something that is really done.

Where we used to live (a couple of years ago), I would eat luch with my boys about 2x a year. It is hard when you are a working mommy or you have little ones at home.

I've already been to the school to eat with my kindergartener 3 times this year. I do not eat but I sit with her while she eats, my youngest DS loves to visit the school.

My older kids would die of embarassment if I showed up to sit with them during lunch though they wouldn't mind if I brought them food and left quickly.

I volunteer for lunchroom helper every other week. I'm not eating with dd though because I'm walking around the lunch room helping the kids. On those days I do stay for recess and play with dd and her friends. They LOVE it! Every time I'm at the school for whatever reason the kids all ask if I'm staying for recess. Once every couple months or so I will go in to have lunch with her. There are tables in the commons area outside the cafeteria that we sit at where it is much quieter. A couple friends come out there with us. Just like recess, the kids all beg me to take them out in the hall for lunch everytime they see me there.

Right now I'm taking full opportunity to spend time with dd at school and get to know her friends. She's in 1st grade now. I know if a few more years she probably won't want me near her school or friends.

BTW, I do think every day is a bit ridiculous. Sounds like the parents may have some control issues.
