Do you kids get any time to wind down, veg out and do nothing, or do they always seem to have something they have to do (i.e., homework, extracurricular activities, etc.)?

Depending on my dd's homework, she usually gets a couple of hours each evening to play or do anything else she wants to do.

Depends on what season it is. Right now they have lots of time. There are days that my dd (15) has no spare time when she has volleyball matches, but she is 15 and she can handle it plus she is an A & B student, so no worries there. My other 4 boys (ages 5, 8, 9 & 10) have nothing going on right now except the 8 yr old has cub scouts. When wrestling starts up again in November, our lives get a little busier. Then when wrestling ends in March, soccer begins and then tennis in the summer. They never have too much homework and are really good students so it never takes them too long to do it. So far down time has not been an issue for us.

A few hours as well. Ds only has about 15 mins. of homework a night, he's in first grade. He doesn't have any extracurriculars now, but in November he's going to be in swim class - but on a Saturday. He'll have PSR once a week and that will be enough for him.

It really just depends on the day and what the homework level is. Both of my guys like to get homework out of the way ASAP (5th & 8th grade). They probably have 30-45 min per night. Sometimes more, sometimes less. After that...they're free to do what they want...so they have a few hours to play outside, ride bikes etc They usually go to swim practice each night. They are free to chose if they want to skip a practice, they rarely do that though.

Oldest DS has something going on every day after school, he is usually home for the day around 7 pm and most of the time he starts his homework during study hall. He does very well with his schedule and keeps up at school.

Oldest DD only has one volleyball game during the week but she is at school by 6 am every morning, if its an away volleyball game she is very good at starting her homework on the bus. It hasn't been a problem for her yet.

Youngest DD has soccer practice 2 times a week, she only has about 15 mins of homework everyday.

I just have a first grader and Kindergartener, so we have lots of down time. They each maybe get homework once a week and it usually only takes 15 minutes at the most. Twice a week they do go to a after school rec program where they get to swim for at least one hour and than play for a 1/2 hour or so. Those nights are a little more pressed for time but nothing too bad. Ds1 just joined cub scouts so that will take a few nights a week of meetings, etc. Both ds1 & ds2 will do basketball this year thru the rec, but that only is for about two months and they just meet once a week for about an hour of practice. But I do not think it will be too much for any of us. I know as they get older we will get busier so I guess I am going to enjoy our down time when we have it.

It matters on the day. Most days they have time but on other days it gets crazy.

My kids (dd 16 and ds 12) get home around 4:15. Ds goes to bed between 9 and 9:30 and dd around 10 usually. They have all evening as free time. They do have homework most evenings, but it's never more than 1/2 hour. They don't participate in activities outside school so they are free to do whatever in the evenings! Dd usually checks her email, reads, watches tv. Ds usually plays outside or builds something!
