Have you, your DH, or your children ever suffered with a drug or alcohol addiction (other than tobacco)? If so, and only if you don't mind sharing, how would you encourage someone struggling (either themselves or their family)?

Thankfully, DH and I have not had this problem. DH has a heart for those in recovery and works closely with several who are trying to get their lives back on track. DH and I both have significant experiences with alcoholism in our families...this is why I don't drink. Looking back at my "party days" I think I could have easily fallen into this trap and just thank God that I got out of that lifestyle when I did.

I have always had a heart for people who struggle here and am obsessed with the shows Intervention and Celebrity Rehab.

No, we have not had any problems. I do feel sorry for those that truly try to break the cycle, but met their journey with intrepidation. I would be there any time of day or night to help someone who really was trying to change. I think that is why I feel pity on those that choose to remain in the cycle. I get angry when they use it as an excuse for their poor choices and behavior.

In regards to a different type of addiction - I had a male friend of mine tell me just after we graduated college he was a sex addict. I was one of his contacts if he was getting ready to hire someone. He got it under control, but I think now that he is going through a divorce he is falling back into the cycle. All I can do is be there for support and encouragement for him. I don't look at him any different and I know he appreciates that I am honest with him. It took a lot for him to tell me his problems.

I am sure you will never know how much your support has meant to him.

My DH & I both have alcoholics in our families so we're very conscious of this. I think that I could very easily have an addictive personality and drank quite a bit when young, so I try to make sure I don't let it get out of hand now. Matter of fact, last time I saw my internist I asked her about my drinking. I've gotten to where I frequently have a glass of wine at night. Usually one, never more than two, but the fact I was "wanting" it every night and looked forward to it was bothering me. So I try to carefully monitor it. We've talked to both of our children too about how they'll have to be really careful of this when they're older. Luckily we've never had drug addiction of any kind in either of our families.

We've thankfully (knock on wood) never had to deal with addictions of any kind.

No, we haven't dealt with any addictions with our immediate family. My DH grew up with an alcoholic father and he vowed never to be that way and he hasn't.

Both of DH's parents are/were alcoholics. So i keep a close eye on how much he drinks. DH smokes cigarettes and i really wished he would quit, he said he would after his dad had a near fatal heartattack a few years ago. His father managed to quit but Dh still hasn't.
