If you wanted to share this experience, please let us know what you used and how you reacted?
What are some common fixes to bad reactions?

Different kind of question, Christy! I am allergic to several prescription meds. Sulfa drugs and penicillin make me break out in hives head to toe. A certain ear drop (that is in the sulfa category) makes me feel like you just stuck fire into my ear canal! Wellbutrin makes me feel like I am having a heart attack, and in fact on monitors shows my heart doing funny jumping. And, I am allergic to latex, which is commonly used in the medical/dental field. I have to be very very careful not to let them forget that! I swell up like a blowfish...and that is even if a needle is put into a bottle with a latex cap on it and then put into my skin. The best thing to do for me is to IMMEDIATELY take Benadryl...and then head for the closest ER.

When I was pregnant with DS#1, I broke out all over my body (I looked like elmo), and my DR. and I could not figure out what it was. We kept thinking it was something I was eating, and we tried everything and basically just put up with it through out my whole pregnancy, and after that it went away, then a year later I was pregnant with DS#2, and the same thing happened, well I had gone on vacation and forgot to take my prenatal vitamins with me, so that's when I figured out that it was the vitamins I was taking. While I was pregnant with DS#1, the DR had changed about 4-5 different types of vitamins as well. So basically it was some ingredient in the vitamins that was making me break out. So when I was pregnant with DS#3, I just went to CVS and got an over-the-counter prenatal and nothing happened.
Also, once I had a really bad sinus infection and they gave me some antibiotic (Bactrim), and I broke out like a tomato over night.

Oh my! I can't take Phenergan (the anti-nausea med.). It makes me loopy and I panic. I was dehydrated from a really bad stomach virus and so they gave it to me in the hospital. DH described it like a "bad acid trip". I don't remember much of it.
It is in my records that is CANNOT take this.

I've had reactions to a few things, but nothing that a good shot of Benadryl can't fix. The weirdest was when the heart problems were going on when I was pregnant, and they ER doc decided I was having a panic attack (yeah, um, ok - my pulse was about 60, and stopping every 3 -6 beats, BP low). They gave me a shot of Ativan - anti-anxiety meds - and about 5 minutes later I ended up with what seemed to be a full blown panic attack - couldn't breath, BP over 200, pulse over 200 and just going haywire. They held me down, shot me with Benadryl, and it stopped. Really weird - not supposed to get panic attacks with anti-anxiety meds. Didn't fix the heart problem though LOL!
I also can't take pseudoephedrine - it knocks me out for at least 16 hours - totally incapable of functioning. Scared the bejeebies out of DH when I took it once. He couldn't wake me.
I more have an issue with not reacting to some drugs. Dilaudid does nothing for me - can pump me full of it, and I have no reaction whatsover. Found that out after ankle surgery. I kept screaming for meds, they kept putting it in. Finally told me I couldn't have anymore. I ended up being admitted, but they checked my eyes and said that the amount I'd had, I should at least be somewhat tired, eyes dilated or something, and nothing was happening. Ended up switching to a morphine pump, that helped a bit, but it was still sucky.

Yep. I'm either super-sensitive to meds or they don't work at all. Some caused my heart to palpitate, others cause dry throat, grogginess, even memory loss. My latest issues are swelling - really bad. Left is worse than right. It's even affected my eyes, which makes sense. I made it go down yesterday and my eyes actually functioned better, but it's back up today.
I have that latex allergy, too. Blessed, be sure there is a stand-out card, big, colorful, etc., in your wallet identifying your allergy. The EMTs use completely different steps. And usually if something happens to someone, they do look through a purse for ID info. When I was in urgent care getting ready for transport to the hospital, I forgot about the allergy - thank God dh was there (I was so out of it anyway) to alert them.

I get hives from sulfa drugs, not horrible but enough to be considered allergic.
I can't take daytime cold meds, like dayquil, it makes me feel like I'm on speed (or what I imagine speed would feel like! ), I get lightheaded and my heart races.
