When I am pacing myself to run longer distances, I usually run a 9-9:30 mile

If I am only running 3 miles, I can run an 8:20 mile

What is your pace?

Right now...I'm running a mile in 12 minutes or so.
I know I can ( and will) do better than this time. I have just started a regular routine about 2 weeks ago. I have been shaving my time down a little more every day that i run.
Maybe a few more weeks and I'll be at 9!!
Is there a certain sneaker that you would reccomend? Mine are really too worn out to keep using these particluar ones.

You can easily move up your time by thinking about the length of your stride. I ran with a group of women yesterday that were running about a 11:30 pace and in all honesty, it hurt to run with them ~literally. I felt my body having to hold back and quick step my stride. If you can instead think about getting a full stride, it will knock off a lot of time for you. You may also want to do some cross training to help strength your legs and to also get them used to working a little harder; building endurance. I like using the Arc Trainer for that

A show to recommend? Well not too long ago I made the suggestion to have your foot scanned. There are a few scanners available to me in "running shoe" stores (versus Footlocker, Champs, etc). Find the "hot spot" shoe place that runners go to and ask to see if they offer a foot scan. It's usually free of charge. You simply walk across a computer screen and get a detailed print off and summary of your stride and pressure points. Based on how that turns out, the sales person can recommend shoes for you. You don't have to buy them right away, just take the names of those shoes home with you and do your research online. You can find GREAT deals online! (if you are military you can find the shoes 20-30% cheaper and free shipping on aafes.com)

If you don't have that option (the foot scan), I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE Asics. It fits my foot well and has a pretty good name among the runners I know at the Y. It's really all personal preference.

What are you currently wearing?

I have Nike's right now...very thick soled..which I really need.
Someone else told me Asics were good for running. I think I'll go out on a "hunt" for a pair of those.
I've never owned Asics before but I'll try them out.

I used to wear Nike a lot too but I found that they started getting really NARROW toed. It was uncomfortable to run in. Then I bought an Asics because my friend and also my dh both recommended them. I LOVED the Asics. Then I had my foot scanned and they too recommended an Asics brand because I needed a "stability" shoe. Asics had one to fit that need. I tried it on and then bought it. As I got more serious about my running, I started making more of an INVESTMENT in the shoe and bought a better model. I now wear the ASICS KEYANO and love love love them..... LOVE!

Thanks so much! I'll google those and see how much I'll need to save up to get a pair of those..LOL!
I hate spending a lot on sneakers or any shoes really but I know if I'm serious about this running then I've got to get something good and long lasting.
Thanks again!

Yah they are pricey and normally I wouldn't spend that much on a shoe, but like I said, I'm putting in the distance and I think of it now as an "investment'. I do need a shoe that will (wait for it......wait for it).....GO THE DISTANCE!

I am happy to hear you are running. This is great! Keep coming back in here and check in with us throughout the week. We have Friday check ins too so join us there as well. Tell us all about your victories, big and small and of course let us help you over the ....(wait for it....wait for it).... hurdles!

Oh how I love the puns!

Let's see...pre-baby, I could run a sub 9 minute mile. Now 2 years post baby and just getting back into the saddle....probably a 12 minute mile.

I currently have Mizuno Wave Riders, version 9 I think. LOVE THEM!

I would highly recommend going to a specialty running store to have your feet, arch, and running gait looked at before you buy your first pair of running shoes. We have a store called Road Runner here in San Diego that I went to and will go to again shortly to have myself looked at again since pregnancy changes your body. The guy there had me jog up and down the parking lot a few times to see how I planted my feet when I ran, then he took an imprint of my foot and looked at the arches of my feet. I need a Stability shoe. He pulled out 6 pairs for me try on and I really liked the Mizuno's. And honestly had I not gone into the store, I probably would have never bought my $125 pair of shoes. But they are well worth the money since they fit properly (so no more blisters on the back on my left foot...yay!). And who knew that when I run my feet could swell up to 3 sizes bigger than what I normally wear? I normally wear a size 8. My Mizuno's are a size 9, but Mizuno's usually run a size bigger so really I am wearing a size 10. But they are sooooo comfortable!

Now I need to go back and try on the Wave Rider 10, 11, and 12 versions since they no longer make the 9's anymore.

Another popular store is called Fleet Feet, so hopefully you have one of two stores I mentioned near you.

Great job at starting on running. Typically I run between 8 & 9 minute mile, really depends on my situation that particular day.

I just bought a new pair of Nike Reax Training and I love them. I have wide feet and have a hard time finding sneakers that fit me comfortably.

Keep up the hard work
