I often wondered this myself.

The mormans are another group that go out and 'ministry'. There are always 2 very nicely dressed young men that go door to door every summer and I've learned through others that this is part of thier religion.

I guess, you could consider me an Evangelical Christian, because the name of the denomination my church is from is the Evangelical Free Church of America. But I just call myself a Christian. I am very sorry for any Evangelicals who bother you.
I do believe God tells me to spread the news. However, there is no need to be pushy. I have never went door to door, neither do I look down on those that do, as long as they aren't pushy, and leave when asked. I think if I act the way I am suppose to, my being a Christian shines through. I feel I should share with people I come in contact with when appropriate situations arise. I feel I should take peoples feelings into consideration. Also, I feel it is important to let non-Christians know, we don't think we are perfect, far from it. But we keep on trying to do what is right. I don't know if I am explaining this correctly or not. Basically, I take the Bible literally, and try to do what it says.

Oh, and why do we feel the need to tell others, well, if what we say is true(and of course I believe it is) why would I want to keep Heaven to myself? Why wouldn't I want to share?

The fastest way to push somebody away is to try to force your ideals or beliefs off on them.

You know when you have kids, if you tell them that they need to do something, they will usually end up doing something totally opposite.

Same with religion, with some people you have to make them think that having an open mind when it comes to religion was their ideal.

YouTube - Penn Says: A Gift of a Bible

Penn Says: A Gift of a Bible

Penn from Penn and Teller

I found this video and immediately thought of this post.

When he says, "How much must you hate someone..." it kind of answered your question for me. Even better than I could have ever answered it.

I really heard his point of "good man" though, too.

I love Penn Jillette.

I appreciated the Penn Jillette thought, but the camera angle was annoying!

I am a Bible-thumping, door knocker myself. I do it because God commands me to. I do it so that others can hear the gospel. I do it because I don't want to look back one day and wish I had done more. I know that not everybody chooses to follow Christ. But I think everyone should at least be offered the opportunity to hear about Him and then choose for themselves.

I can appreciate his angle, even though I don't agree.
It's not an act of hate to not proselytize, no matter how wonderful you think your religion is. It's an act of respect for boundaries. The analogy of pushing someone out of the way of a speeding truck doesn't hold. The truck barrelling down the highway is a provable fact and the effect of two tons of steel travelling 60 miles an hour when it impacts a human body is predictable with a pretty high degree of certainty; Hell isn't provable.
I mean, I happen to think that we would all be much better off if the whole world had the same religious beliefs as I do. But religion is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. So I don't go knocking on strangers' doors or handing out copies of The Spiral Dance or Drawing Down the Moon on street corners and in schools.
When the subject comes up, I express my beliefs. I don't try to talk people into adopting them as their own.
Quite frankly, I don't see belief as a true choice. You either believe something or you don't, and you can't choose to believe something that you just don't. I can tell myself that the creature purring in my lap is a mackerel, I can want it to be a mackerel, but the fur, the pointy ears, the vertical pupils, and the long tail make it impossible for me to choose to believe that it is a mackerel.
I couldn't believe in the resurrection of Jesus even if I wanted to - it just doesn't make sense to me. Just as a Christian could not make him/herself believe in the existence of the sprites that I am sure share living quarters with me and my husband.

Mind if I ask you a question then? OK, so everyone should have a chance to hear about Christianity and make the choice for themselves - that makes perfect sense. So why do you (not you personally, but all evangelicals who proselytize) keep knocking? I've already been offered the opportunity. I've heard about it. I spent 12 years in Christian schools. You pretty much have to live under a rock in this country to not have some exposure to Christianity. Why make the assumption that I haven't already been offered the opportunity? That I haven't already made my choice? And if I've made my choice, why is my choice not respected?

I've no problem with information being mailed to me, or if I receive an invitation to a local church, or if there is a "revival" meeting or something that I can choose to go to if I'm curious. I just don't want people knocking on my door or approaching me in front of stores as if they have information that is even remotely interesting or useful to me.
