Recent research has shown that walkers (non sweating I presume) are just as effective at weight loss and weight maintenance as other exercisers.

However, to give your heart a work-out, you're going to need to sweat.

I think it does depend on what kind of "effective" workout you're looking for. As pp said, walking is very effective, but not always sweaty. Same with yoga (depending on which kind you do). But if I want a really kick butt, make myself feel good workout, the sweat is gonna be there!
