Dh has decided that he needs a little religion in his life. He grew up Catholic but has been anti-religion for as long as I have know him ( 25+ yrs). I grew up Lutheran and the kids and I went to a Lutheran church before we moved 2.5 yrs ago. I checked out the Lutheran churches around here when we moved and found that they were nothing like I was used to. I worked most Sunday mornings here anyway so I gave up my search and we have not been to church since. Where do we start our search for a new religion?

I'm assuming you mean a differnt sect of Christianity, but for myself, I just started reading different books of different religions, and spoke with others with different religions - I read the Qur'an, talked a lot with a Hindu friend, read about Buddhism online, read and talked about Paganism and Wicca with friends, etc. The Buddhism stuff appealed to me the most, and I decided to follow that more, and the more I understand of it, the more I like. I think that goes with any faith or belief system - you have to find that "faith" by understanding and believing, not by others saying that's how it is.

Good luck!

Dh was agnostic (I think that's the word for it--believes in God but not organized religion) for awhile, but decided about 2 1/2 years ago we should expose the girls to church. We wanted a family oriented church that wasn't full of judgemental people with all fire and brimstone. We found a church that we all love and is very accepting of all kinds of people. They are there to help people--not judge them. Dh found it by going through the yellow pages and liked their mission statement online.

Word of mouth works nice to find a new church or religion. Also try just visiting. There is a church just up the street that I knew wasn't for me, but our neighbors went up to check it out. People were flopping on the ground acting like they were seizing while the Spirit was entering them. Not for me but works for some people.

If you're looking for Catholic lite, you might check out Episcopal churches in your area.

If you're looking for something that honors Christian beliefs, as well as beliefs of other traditions, including Humanism, I'd recommend the Unitarians.
My Unitarian church celebrates not only Christian holy days, but also holy days and watershed events from other faith traditions as well. Our congregation includes Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Pagans, agnostics, and atheists.

My dh was actually very interested in Unitarian church, but sadly, there is not one for miles and miles around us.

As a recovering cradle Catholic myself, I second looking into Episcopal churches. They vary, some much more conservative than others, by many are very forward thinking and accepting.

Try looking up the names of churches in your area and look at their website. The website can say a lot about their beliefs and practices. When I was looking at Episcopal churches I found one I didn't know existed in my small city, the website expressed their openness to all people, was very positive and offered many different venues to explore faith like meditation services and a labyrinth.

Your DH is a deist. Mine is too.

I think for folks coming from an atheist/agnostic/deist/secular perspective, the Unitarian church will be the most comfortable.

I didn't want to have to "change" too much about myself or my lifestyle to be a member of an organized faith. When I felt I could be me, flaws and all, and still be accepted but also have the opportunity to build on my faith, I knew it was the religion for me.

I've been Lutheran all my life. I find it's what fits me best still to this day. I did have to change churches a while back (long story). We tried a few and found most Lutheran churches in our area are much more comtemporary than I'm used to. (I'm VERY conservative & traditional) We tried another Lutheran church and it's perfect for us. So if you didn't like the one you tried, you might try another one!
