I got a new short cut that I really like, finally! Anyway, I dye my hair using non-permanent hair dye. I am thinking of adding highlights. Is this something I can do myself or would I need help? I am not one of those that is artistic with hair .

If I do opt to do the highlights myself, can I:

Dye my hair the color that I usually dye it (dark ash blond) and then do highlights on top of that?

My hair stylist wanted their people to do it, but I've gone to their colorist and did not like her at ALL. On top of that, I use a non-permanent dye for health reasons. I'm sure it's just as bad as the permanent ones they use as the salon, but it makes me feel better since this brand has been shown to be a little safer than the permanent brands or salon semi - permanent brands.

Oh, and it saves me a TON of money, so going to the stylist is not really an option for coloring.

Thanks for any and all input

I know you can buy highlighting kits to do yourself. Maybe go to Sally's and one of the girls can help with all your questions!

I cut and dye my own hair, but I've never tried to do highlights. Mama Nature takes care of that - I use henna (I can't stand the ammonia in most hair dyes - my hair smells like Mike the Tiger's litter box for a week after using that stuff), and it turns the brown dark auburn, and the grey becomes copper highlights.
I know they make the kits that basically consist of a shower cap with holes in it and a bottle of peroxide.

Sure can!

I just did it a few weeks ago...Revlon Colorsilk (only hair color I will use ~I swear by it's grey coverage) ash blonde and I just waited 2 days and had DH do my highlights (Also Revlon). LOVE LOVE LOVE my results!

I've always died my own hair...NEVER felt I could justify the prices of having a professional do it...

I've died my hair at all lengths, anywhere from a pixie cut, to hair down the middle of my back. The only thing I find that changes, would be the amount I'd have to buy. Never had to do highlights, tho..mother nature took care of that for me. Had I decided to, though, I think I would have had a friend come over, to help.

This is odd...about 1/2 hour before I saw this, I posted some questions about hair dyes in Product Talk.
