For us, there were actually two - one in my religious tradition and one in my husband's).

His tradition's blessing consisted of the two of us going to the house as soon as we got the keys, introducing ourselves to her, asking her to tell us her name, thanking her for allowing us to live in her, promising her that we would make our very best efforts to take proper care of her, and giving reiki okiyome in each room.

My tradition's blessing ritual consisted of getting a group of friends together and casting a circle. Before everyone arrived, I consecrated a broom and an athame with salt water and incense (representing the four elements of earth [salt], air [smoke], fire [the ember of the incense], and water). When we cast the circle, we invoked the power of each elemental spirit over its corresponding aspect of the lives of any who enter into our home (earth - body, air - mind, fire - spirit, water - emotions), as well as in our day-to-day lives as we make the house into our home.
We swept the inner perimeter of the house to remove any residual negative energy that previous occupants might have left behind, ending at the door, where we swept it out of the house. We then inscribed a pentagram at each window and door using the athame and then a smudge stick to seal the house against negative energy. I hung a bundle of sage on the outside of each door (sage repels negative energy). I also placed a small gargoyle by the front door (gargoyles are guardians).

Oh my, no offense, but this sounds like witchcraft to me-scary stuff.
