We are non demontial christian and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good bedtime devotional books for children that are elementary school age?

What an excellent question! I tried getting little bible stories for my son, but so many of them have stories of death, sacrifice and cheating in them, traits we wanted to stay away from at a young age. He just found out this year SOME of what Easter was really about and it affected him deeply - all kinds of questions about why.

I would love to find some told at a young child's level without the fire and brimstone.

Can dark get darker?

Here are two of our favorites:

Blessings Every Day by Carla Barnhill "introduces young children to the Bible and its wonderful promises. The simple devotions feature a Bible verse for every day of the year along with text written in a light, upbeat style that connects with a young child's experiences. Each devotion is highlighted by a short poem or prayer, and every page is colorfully enhanced with an adorable illustration by the Care Bears artist." The publisher recommends this book for 2-5 year olds BUT I would recommend it up to age 10+. I even enjoy it and learn from it! The reading level is age 9 (I think).

Day by Day by Betty Free has "a Bible verse from an easy-to-understand translation, a conversational reaing about the verse and how i applies to a young child'slife, a simple question for furher cnversation between you and your child, and a prayer that you can say with your child as a response to the reading." The publisher recommends it for Ages 3-6, but, again, I woud recommend it up to 10. This book has more Bible story-oriented devotions than the previous book.

We have used these books several years and LOVE them both. The boys always looked forward to devotion time with these books. I have also used a Veggietales book (I can't remember the name of it) made for family devotions. It was geared towards daytime devotions though as it had several activities to go along with the devotions. The boys LOVED it, too.
