I've always wanted to give it a try. Does anyone here meditate? Can you teach yourself to do this, or did you take a class?

The biggest thing about meditation is relaxation. If you have no idea where to start go get a book. There are several strategies on how to get started, but the best meditation is finding a way to clear your mind completely.

I have done a fair bit of meditation in relation to our martial art and love it. I believe you can teach yourself given a good book, DVD or CD on the subject. I personally love the CDs. Most libraries will have a nice selection to try before you purchase. The key is to find one that suits you -- wether it be religious, nature or musically focused.

i taught myself how to meditate. it didn't take long and it was easy to do. what i do is i count backwards from 10 and repeat it until my body is completely relaxed and all i am concentrating on is the countdown, and then i count down the rainbow and focus on the colors in the shapes of numbers what i do is red 7, orange 6, yellow 5, green 4, blue 3, indigo 2, orchid 1 and by then i am so relaxed and my mind is blank its wonderful if i feel the world intruding on my meditation i concentrate on something else relaxing, like an ocean scene or a happy time, or somethign like that. meditation to me is all about focusing on something completely stressless. it usually puts me to sleep lol.

I'm a bit too impatient and "A" personality to meditate, per se, but I know that meditation and yoga can go hand in hand and I love yoga - I used to do it all the time before having kids. So if you already have done yoga, you're halfway there, because it teaches you many of the same techniques - freeing your mind, centering yourself, relaxing so you can stretch and releasing energies. There are some decent yoga videos on the market and getting one or two could be a good start - having the soothing voice helps a lot, but also having the visual aspect helps (although your eyes will be closed when you are really practicing) - it helps me ensure my posture more than a book or cd/audiotape would. I have tried doing it in a class, but in truth, I get distracted by all the sniffs and coughs around me that people do, plus the fear of falling asleep and having an instructor have to wake me.

But it really does help with self-renewal and centering. I really need to get back into it!
