I just found out that jumping rope burns a number of calories and I want my daughter and I to start jumping. (she is 10 with a slight weight problem but I dont want to draw attention to it just want to get active with her) Anyway not sure what type or what length of jump rope to buy. (so many to choose from, unlike when I was growing up and you just ran to the store and picked up a jump rope and they were all the same) Any advice or tips would be great.

you can jump rope with no rope--you can hold small free weights and make the arm motions while you jump--no tangling and no frustration. small trampolines are great fun for jumping, too...we keep ours in the living room and the girls jump on it all the time.

just make sure you jump in good shoes that absorb impact.
mix up the jumping with walking. walk a hundred feet then challenge your dd to a jump off--say 25 jumps--then walk some more.

have fun!

Buy an inexpensive one to start with. I can tell you from experience that jumping rope is hard work. My son had to do it for wrestling and was having difficulty with it so dh and I decided to show him we could do it. We only lasted about a minute, no joke. We both considered ourselves pretty fit until we did that .
