I used to feel intimidated by the gym because there was so much stuff and I was absolutely clueless about it all.....and of course I was worried about what others must be thinking about me as I meander around the gym looking so lost. But now that I've been a few times, I've learned a few things (and I hope by sharing them someone else will learn it too)

1) NOBODY cares what you're doing.....nobody. People look around to see who they know, but no one is there to judge you. In fact, they are giving you kudos for being there...you are one of them!!

2) the weight machines all have pictures and explanations as to how to use the machine! Yay! that helps a lot too when you are new to a gym. You don't have to feel silly about asking someone for help

3) asking for help is common ~ if for a veteran gym goer....there are people paid to be there to help you so use them if you have questions

4) FITLINXX is awesome...if your gym has one, set up a time to meet with someone to show you around and how to use it...and start using it! It's an awesome program

5) The weight room is not just for boys. If you want to use free weights, you just mosie on in there and grab a set. Again, the mentality is: you are one of them!! They will give you kudos for being so 'strong'!!

6) If you don't like what is on the media center, ASK for them to change the channel. That is perfectly ok and chances are, others will be happy you took the initiative too!

So get in there....don't be shy.....and get movin!

I don't mind gyms but I don't like the only gym we have in town it is the college one and I can't stand it there all the girls are just standing around trying to hook up and talking about everyone else. I think it depends on the gym and location. I have nothing about people going there to meet others but when you are not working out or just hanging out there that is when it makes me feel uncomfortable.

Christy, It took me to really truly feel comfortable in a gym until I was 35 which now that I look back is soooo silly! Your right NO one is paying attention to you they are all there for same goals!

I second that Fitlixx is AWESOME

The only thing about a gym that intimidates me is the cost

girl, you crack me up.

At first b/c I didn't know how to use the equiptment and then b/c I didn't know anyone and eveyone seems to know everyone else. But going occasionally u start to recognize people and they are always nice. "hey, I haven't seen you in a while. have u been going on a different day" that sort of thing.
Funny thing is I was NEVER intimidated by my weight.
