I was reading the November 25th issue of The LOOKOUT, a weekly Christian magazine, and came across this wonderful visual in the editorial.

Consider a jar. Fill it full of rocks. Is it full? Yeah, it looks full. What if you add pebbles? Some of the pebbles filter down into the small holes between the rocks. Now it's full. Right? What if you add sand? Sand filters down through the rocks and pebbles until the jar is full.

Now, compare the jar to the contents of your life. The rocks are the important things (family, friends, health, spirit). The pebbles are the significant but not highly important things (job, house, possessions). The sand is everything else -- the small stuff. If you fill the jar first with sand, there will be no room for the rocks or pebbles. The same is true in your life. If you fill it up with small stuff, there is no room for the truly important things.

Are you spending time on the small stuff at the risk of the important things?

That's a great analogy. I think I most recently read it (or something similar) in Stephen Covey's Secrets to Highly Effective Families.

Great analogy. I think we have a healthy balance of rocks, pebbles, and sand. Of course, we prefer to surround ourselves with rocks, which to use make us stronger and more appreciative of all the other stuff!
