Why don't I use it?

I hate it that I am packing on the pounds....literally. So why is it that I keep eating and eating and still don't do anything about it? And now that we are in a house my parents gave us their treadmill. I haven't used it since last July. I am just so down on myself about all of this. I am so sick of wearing like 4 things in my wardrobe because everything else keeps getting smaller and smaller. HELP!! I NEED the MOTIVATION!! Where can I find it?

This is what I did. I put a small TV in front of the treadmill and said I could only watch ____________ if I was walking on the treadmill. it doesn't have to be some big sweat fest. evem just 15 mintues a day.
I rarely use mine BUT I always use it at the Y.

Did you see my mommysavers to 5k thread? I started it today. It was great! It was much more interesting and the time went by faster than just walking the entire time. I walked for 5 minutes then alternated running for 60 seconds and walking for 90.

Sonja,

The best thing you can do to keep yourself motivated, especially if you are new to exercise is this:

1) MAKE time for exercise. If you have to get up at 5:30am, then do that. It will be tough at first, but your body will thank you...and NO you won't be as tired as you think you will be throughout the day. Exercising ENERGIZES you. I promise

2) When you get up, get your work out clothes on right away. Have them lined up and right at the foot of the bed. Put them on before you talk yourself out of it. I know that sounds bizarre, but it works. It's all about mind over matter

3) Wherever your treadmill is, make sure you can either watch tv or listen to music. It helps a TON if you can do that while using it. If you can, then put it infront of the window! YOu have to be able to distract yourself from what you are actually doing!

4) Don't think you can do an hour's worth of cardio out of the starting blocks. BUILD up your endurance. Do thirty minutes three times a week....and then build from there: and this means over the course of six months etc.

- thirty minutes four times a day
-build up your inclines from 0 to 2, 2 -4, 4-6
-build up your speed
-then do a combo of all of it: time, incine, and speed!

You can totally do this Sonja! You can!

We had an old used treadmill (Actually I found it for free on trash day - but that's a whole other story!). I used it for awhile, and then found it collecting dust in my basement. Just looking at it would make me feel guilty. I wonder if the guilt is causing you to eat more?? That was when I was in my Feng Shui stage, and the book I was reading recommending getting rid of anything in your house that made you feel bad or guilty. So, I gave it to my MIL! Anyway, my point is I felt SO MUCH BETTER by getting rid of it. And ironically enough, I'm now working out at the Y when it fits my schedule. Do you have other exercise options? If you're really not using the treadmill and aren't motivated to start, I'd say give it back to your parents and try something else. I think sometimes we get what we need in life by giving it away.

~or~

Can you create a space for it that looks fun and inviting? Allow yourself to watch a "guilty pleasure" TV show while using it? Those are things that worked for me before I fell of the treadmill bandwagon. I agree - starting small (commit to 10 minutes) will help ease your guilt and empower you to do more.

That is very true too! I keep mine in the garage and have a mini gym set up out there complete with cable tv and a "ghetto blaster" (ghetto blaster...so funny) I don't have to look at it unless I am gearing up and getting ready to use it. BUt because we are members of the Y I use the Y most times, and when the kids are sick and can't go to child watch, I use my own gym!

This is me. There are certain shows I love and TiVo but my rule is I can only watch them if I'm on the treadmill.

I was really discouraged about my weight too. I am trying so hard. This is the hardest thing I've ever done. Knowing you are all out there doing it along with me is very motivating. I'm tired of feeling like a failure. I got mad at myself and started working out again. If nothing else, it sure helps to clear my head.

stop that negative talk my friend. Let's focus on the positive:

1) you ARE doing something about it!
2) You ARE motivated
3) You are a strong woman!
4) It will happen for you

To see quicker results, be sure to measure your inches.....measuring INCHES LOST is definitely a sure way to see results!!!! Pounds will go up as you gain muscle mass (which is a good thing) but some people feel discouraged when they see the scale go up...so take measurements EACH and EVERY month!!!!
