Okay I know there has to be things I can do at home w/o paying for a gym membership. I need to get motivated to work out. I think I can do it if you guys will be my support. This site has been wonderful support for every other aspect of my life. I hope it will be the same here. So anyways.....any ideas you can throw my way.

Do you have a workout DVD? Pilates? Aerobics? Walking/Running? Weights? Sit-ups? Push-Ups? What do you do? Let me know. Thanks.

Also when do you work-out? Morning-Afternoon-Evening? When the kids are awake? Asleep?

Do it when the kids are awake, and you have someone to workout with. This is especially good if you are not used to working out. You can start out with a kids excercise tape, and do it with them. And then work up to an adult tape. I also think walking is very good to start out with at first.
I remember when the kids were little and I was trying to walk around the living room in circles for exsercise. Everyone, including the dog followed me around.

I don't have kids so I can't help with that part. Here's what I do:

1) If you have Time Warner digital cable, I use the exercise channel for videos. They have a really good ab segment.

2) I bought some 10 pound weights and an exercise band (dh bought me a pilates ball one year). A lot of the times while watching tv, when the commercials come on I'll just start doing some exercises. My rule is that I have to work out for the entire commercial break. I try to do one or two types of exercises during each commercial break that focuses on the same muscle groups. Arms one break, quads the next, calves, shoulders, etc.

3) I take several walks a day, just to get out. If I want to count them as exercise I walk a little faster.

When I get clearance from my doctor (I am not allowed to do any strenous exercise because of a thyroid condition that is affecting my heart) I'll go back to training for triathlons and duathlons. Just running and bike riding involoved with those.

Good luck and I'm sure you will do a great job!

I wake up before the kids and exercise around 5am. I have been doing a run/walk program for 5 weeks. It has taken me to a new level of fitness. I used to do workout videos (The Firm, etc) but nothing has pushed me over the plateau like this program Cool Running :: The Couch-to-5K Running Plan. I also do yoga and strength training 2x week.

If you are just getting started you could rent videos from Netflix or something until you find one that you like.

Walking is a great way to get started.

Every little bit helps!

In the summer, we walk outside & we ride our bikes regularly. We also do yoga every week, but that costs some. In the winter, we did invest in a recumbant bike so we can keep up with our "riding" in the winter & then it's not so hard in the spring when we pull the bikes out again. I also have a couple of 10 minute workout dance videos. They each have 5 ten minute workouts, so you can do a few of them or just one if you don't have much time. I generally do the bike for a while, then one of the 10 minute routines (the latin/salsa dance one is pretty challenging) and then I might do some crunches. Jumping rope is great if you have a place to do it.

I clean the house like crazy - that is mop the floors, clean the baseboards, scrub the windows etc or pull out everything from the cabinets and rearrange them.

In spring, I do gardening and always park my car at the farthest spot.
