There was a recent study for people who have the kind of arthritis that I have that indicates that people who follow a gluten-free, vegan diet are less likely to get heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is a huge issue in my family history.
I've been vegan before and it is very difficult. I decided to start with the gluten-free part. There are theories that the people with my kind of arthritis are helped by avoiding starches so I figure that is a good place to start while I lower my other non-vegetarian consumption. I'll probably keep egg whites and some dairy in my diet. Right now, the prednisone is making me crave steak so I'm still eating lean beef.
Anyone else gluten-free? Any hints? Any products you love?

My DD who is 4 is completely gf. She has celiac desease. We've been working through some of the products trying to find the best brands of things. The truth is, it's very overwhelming at first- but the more you get use to it the easier it gets! We have found the PERFECT GF bread at a local bakery, all of the stuff from grocery stores weren't very good.
The best site I can give you is www. glutenfree.com check it out. It's about more than just buying their stuff, it's really informative.

I'm thinking I might stay with it.
The first thing I noticed is my sinuses have started to clear. I'm much less puffy. I've had no improvement with my arthritis, but I don't mind eating more fruit and veggies instead of bread.

My MIL, BIL's and nephew are all celiacs, so although our house is not gluten free, sometimes I have to cook gluten free.
On an aside note, I just found out recently that play-doh is not gluten free! Argh! Who knew? LOL
There is a lot of information out there and it can be very overwhelming. One good list I found for products is here:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/celiac/start
Go to the website, Click on "messages"
On the left (at the top), Select "GF Product List"
Then you can click on the PDF.

Oregano, I am just curious. Did someone have problems while playing with the playdough, or did someone eat it?

No idea...I just read about it and then talked to my SIL about it because I sent play-doh in my nephew's Easter basket and she confirmed, that nope, he can't play with it. I didn't question her about specifics. So I don't know if it's because a child might eat it, or if residue on the hands might get in the mouth etc Perhaps if one is vigilant about hand washing and washing surfaces afterwards, it's okay? I honestly, don't know.

People who have celiac sprue disease can't be around any wheat or gluten AT ALL. Breathing it in is a problem. And the wheat/gluten can be absorbed through the skin so they have to be careful about the lotions and toiletry items they use.

I have celiac disease and have been gluten free for 2 years. I am however, still working on the hidden gluten found in lotions and potions ( I hardly use any though )
It was a hard first 6 months, but now I am even baking some things!

Cookie, if you stop in and post in our Special Needs forum here on mommysavers, you will find others who follow that diet, due to the medical needs of their child. My son has a gluten sensitivity, according to blood tests, but we haven't gotten as far as being gluten free yet. Some follow the Feingold diet, but I don't remember if that addresses gluten.
