Or argument due to someone trying to convert you to another religion? What about you defending your religion to someone that has judged it before?


Religion is always a touchy subject, and I try not to touch upon it with people that aren't emotionally available or willing to have simple conversation. I know a person that is Atheist, and she has so many different views in regards to life and death. We haven't gotten confrontational, but things have gotten a bit heated.

No, but my roommate and I became a little heated one time when she yelled at some little kids who were knocking on doors and inviting people to their church for Easter. Just the previous week she had been cold calling strangers and inviting them to a political party meeting. Truthfully I didn't see a lot of difference between the two and I most certainly didn't think she should be yelling at little kids. Luckily she did finally agree with me.

The most negativity I've ever received to my being atheist is on this board. The most pressure to believe in Christianity I've ever received (and I went to Catholic schools for 12 years) is on this board. No one here has done anything to change my mind yet!

I do not answer the door to the religious folks who go door to door. I do not believe that people should try to convert others via "recruitment". If someone asks you, or stops at your church - fine. But preaching in front of WalMart or knocking on doors I consider intrusive.

To me your religion views are a personal choice and is between you and God.

I do try to live my life by example and I don't go around trying to convert people.

I have never gotten into a fight with anybody over religion. If someone comes to the door, I just tell them that I have a regular church of choice that I am happy at. And I thank them and shut the door.

A former co-worker of mine almost lost her mind when she heard me say to another worker that I had a female pastor, and the conversation got extremely heated. I told her that clearly my religion was not as strict as hers and that it is my belief that you don't have to be a man to receive your calling and that things have changed. Her response was "God's word never changes, and it's right there in the bible that women should not lead the church." She got very worked up and started crying, told me that I need Jesus and she would pray for me, then she began singing "oh, how I love Jesus".

A few years later, I ran into her with her "live-in boyfriend" at State Fair as she was slamming back a beer looking incredibly goth with tattoos and black fingernails. I'm not criticizing goths or tattoos, but this was a drastic change from what she looked like before. When we worked together she was married and desperately trying to have kids. She then told me about her tubal ligation and divorce. She did a complete 180, so I guess God's word changed for her in this instance.

Back when I was atheist/agnostic, yeah. I had a friend who was very Christian, parents were missionaries etc. We would banter back and forth a lot - we stayed civilized, but we could get heated - we both had fun debating each other. Some of the stuff he said still cracks me up.

Now, I don't really get confronted. My dad was trying to egg me on last week, since my mom has converted to Catholicism all the way. I guess they were talking about me, and he called to see how I really believed. Mom thought I was pagan or wiccan, which I had been reading about a long while ago. I didn't really want to deal with dad, but he started going on about the supreme being and how everything was made by god, and I finally told him I believe more along the lines of Buddhism. That really threw him He tried to deal out some snarky jokes, one hand clap and all that. I didn't bite, and he decided he had other things to talk about.

The very few I've talked to in real life on what I believe seem to really have a hard time trying to find something to debate or tell me I'm wrong in. Usually they look at me like I'm crazy, since I'm not a bald man in robes. Much different than when I said I was an atheist or agnostic - then everyone wanted to save or convert me to something.

No, I haven't ever gotten in an argument about my faith. I love to have conversations with people of other beliefs. I like to learn the "why" behind their faith. I think people get "acceptance/respect" and "approval" confused. I can accept whatever you believe. By definition, it is yours and I can accept/respect that. I don't have to approve of whatever you believe. That would make it "mine". But, I don't need to run around telling people whether or not I approve of them.
It has always seemed to me that the most volatile people are those who are not sure of either where they stand or why they stand there. I can actually sympathize with their frustration because that would be a very "scary" place to be. JMO. Hope it doesn't offend anyone...seriously. I agree, "religion" is such a sensitive subject.

No, I refuse to fight about religion. I don't see the point. I am Catholic and I don't plan on changing and I'm not interested in changing anyone else. Everyone has the right to their own beliefs.
