Ok girls.....we're gearing up to put some miles on our shoes.....so our first assignment is to check our shoes.

Ask yourself:

When did you buy them? (always date the inside of your shoe)
How many miles a week do I put on them?
How do my shins feel after I run?
Where do my toes fit in the shoe?
How tight do I tie them?

These questions will help determine if your shoes are ready to put some miles on them in the upcoming weeks. My goal is to get up to at least 10K by the fall. It's going to kick my butt, but I want to do it...and with your help I will be able to.

So check your shoes, and let's get started!

I really need better shoes. I have $29 Avia specials

I twisted my knee running on Satruday on the towpath. I had to run around mud puddles from the storms prior in the week. It was foggy, hot and humid at 6am.

I don't know if I can reach 10k but I can try!! I wanted to run 8k on Saturday but my clothing was completely soaked and I was melting. I had cramps in my legs and my knee was killing me. Good news is, my knee is feeling better today.

I'm also going to try to run 4x a week instead of 3.

I'm such a geek, I got a new running tank and can't wait to try it!!

Thanks for starting the running club

I should probably back track and say:

Not everyone will have the same distance goals. My goal is 10K, your's is 8K and maybe someone else is eager to meet a half marathon distance. Whatever the distance may be, the idea behind this club is 1) build up endurance, 2) encouragement and 3) strength training. It will be a combination of all these things so that we can all go longer, further and get better at it too!

There is no time limit on our goals. We are simply going for endurance and stamina here. I won't set weekly goals, but rather challenges that will help us ALL in the long run. We'll have strength training tests, breathing tests, timing tests, distance tests and even incorporate some walking too. But we all have to stay committed...not just for ourselves, but for our team. I AM RELYING ON ALL OF YOU TO CARRY ME ACROSS A 10K FINISH LINE. I am still hanging my head in shame for bailing on my half marathon training, but since being home and running here, I have a newfound taste for distance running...and I WANT to complete a 10K,....even if it kills me...

So....with that said, are we ready to run?

By the way, where is greytrunner?

I definitely need a new pair of running sneakers! Great tip on putting the date on the inside. I want to run a 10K by fall time too. I have not been running outside for the past 5 days since it has been so hot & humid even at 5:30am! But it is breaking tomorrow so I cannot wait to run Wednesday am! I actually miss it -- hoping I can pace myself on Wednesday and push it to a 4 mile run!

So, what should the answers be to these questions? I'm new to this running thing and don't know how many miles before new shoes are a must.

How tight should you tie them? I tie them so they are snug but not uncomfortably tight.

My shoes were purchased I believe in February and I started the c25k early March. I also wear them to work Monday - Friday. I know I shouldn't but my other shoes are nasty. I think they should be good for maybe 8 months yet.

A good indicator for me would be:

1) how well you've worn your treads of your shoes out
2) how your shins feel when you run
3) if you only use your running shoes for running

I have a pair of "running" shoes that are only used as running shoes. That way I can easily track their wear. Plus walking in running shoes wears them out in a different way and the actual sole can lose it's shape and comfort. Think about how you walk, and then think about how your run. You are putting more emphasis on your heel when you walk and typically need more side support...running shoes allow you to impact the pavement different using the cushion of your foot and having more give on the sides as your foot impacts the road. So with that said, it's also important you don't tie your shoes too tight when you run. You want your foot to be able to expand as it hits the pavement.

When you run, if you feel dull aches in your shins or in your calves, it's time to replace your shoes. Don't wait for the problem to get better on it's own. That is your body telling you the shoes need to go. They are no longer supporting you the way you need to be supported when you run.

Had to walk today

Apparently my knee is a little more injured than I thought. I ran 10 minutes and decided I might be making it worse if I kept going. I walked 30 minutes after that.

Shoes are good . Pretty much brand new with maybe 25 miles on them.

My goal is a triathlon in September, even if I can't participate because of my MOA trip I want to be in the shape to be able to do it. The run portion is 4 miles and I've been lagging in that department. Swim and bike are on.. run is .

My shoes are good for a few more months. I haven't ran yet this week. I'm taking a bit of a break. But I do plan on getting some run and walk time in. I have family in town so my schedule is a little off. I did get ski yesterday so I got some excercise
