I don't know if I am considered a long distance runner, but I have trained and ran in 2 half marathons now. Honestly, I do not use gels/goo/beans/chews whichever they are. Actually, you can just use jelly beans or gummy bears when running, I've read that it has the same kind of effect. What helped me get some energy throughout the run was drinking gatorade at the water stops, just one swallow and I could tell a big difference in my pace and energy.
I also have tried the energy chews that are in with the gums at the cash registers... that didn't help me at all, I didn't feel any different but an upset stomach. I even tried one not running, just to see if I would get a reaction and nothing.
The key to using gels for energy is to use them when you are training too, because if you do not, you will get sick during your actual run. I do not train using these and when I ran the last 1/2 marathon, I took along a few jelly beans and ate only 1 around the 5-6 mile mark... it made my stomach upset.
I think it depends on how far you are running on the intervals of eating them, I think I read somewhere that a good measure is to break it up by 5ks or every 3 miles.
