UGH! I get what are referred to as "short, intense migraines" with every side effect...partial blindness, unilateral pain, nausea/vomit, etc. They only last 3-5 hours though so I feel pretty fortunate. I also only get them a couple of times a year. (My heart really breaks for those who have them longer and more frequently.) So, here is my question for any of you who have migraines. What prescription do you take that works? So far, I have tried Imitrex, Maxalt, and Relpax. None have helped at all and one of the worst migraines I have had happened while trying Maxalt...it lasted longer, was more intense, and I was sicker.

I suffer from migraines on average 5 times a month. I am currently taking Frova (I have been through all the others). It does work for me but it takes about 2 hours to start. I do have them very severe though. This sounds strange but sometimes putting ice on the back of my neck relieves some of the pain. It may be worth a try and cheaper than meds!

I used to get migranes when i was on the pill (one of the reasons why we decided to go the vasectomy route for birth control) and I would get them monthly. I used tramadol, and I like it.

Maxalt did the exact same thing to me. I was in so much pain my dh thought I was dying and wanted to take me to the hospital. I don't do any prescriptions. Mine were usually set off my stress, and since I quit my job I haven't had that many. Good luck to you though.

WHen it comes to migraines it can be a variety of things

Make sure you are plenty hydrated

had a good night's rest

manageable stress

hormones

get some exercise to see if you can burn off any of that build up....

Hope you're feeling better soon

Thanks so much! I'll mention the Frova to my doctor. The only thing that we have found so far that works is 4 ibuprofen and a full dosage of an over the counter sleep aide. If I can get that taken during the "aura" stage, I can usually keep the nausea/vomiting to a minimum and sleep some of it off. The problem comes when I wake up with the pain of one and have slept through the aura...UGH! It is absolutely too late to take anything that doesn't dissolve into the bloodstream quickly b/c I will throw it up (sorry if TMI). That's what happened today.

I'll also try the ice pack and making sure I am hydrated. I don't drink nearly enough water.

Like I said, I really don't want to complain too much. So many have such a worse problem...gosh, I am really sorry you have them so often mom2ame. I just don't know how you do it.

Thanks for all of your tips.

My dh is the same way. He has tried every prescription out there. I believe that part of his is triggered from stress and bad eating habits. I did hear that if you have frequent migraines that you are low on vitamin B complex. I don't know if that is true or not but it could be worth a shot. Unfortunately dd#1 who is only 8 started getting them too. I am hoping that she does not get them often.
Anyway, good luck I hope you can find something that works for you. I know that they are no fun.

When I started having migraines my Dr tried a variety of meds trying to find out what would work. I was having about 10-15 a month at the time. I am now down to 1 or 2 a month and they are usually right before my cycles. I am currently taking topamax and amitryptlin as preventatives. If the migraines are really bad and Imitrex won't work we have Toradol that my DH gives me. My had to show my DH how to give the Toradol since it is and intermuscular shot. It at least keeps me from having to go into the dr's office or the ER for a shot. The Toradol takes care of my migraine every time.

My doctor prescribes propranolol (generic name). The
brand name is Inderal. I take it 3 times a day, it costs about
$5 a month. (There is a 1 a day, but it's about $35 a month.)

Since I've been on it, I went from having 2-3 migraines a week
to 1 or 2 migraines a YEAR. It's great, cheap and works!!

BUT, one side effect is short term memory loss. I've been on it
about 8 years. I tend to do those "absent minded" things. I have
to write down daily lists, etc. It's worth it to me though!
