We've lost three recently. One we had rebuilt. One is completely shot. And another -- well there still is some use in it. But we're not exactly sure what to do with them all.

What do you do?

Maybe someone will take them for free for parts (craigslist)???

We can pay to recycle them at our dump.

If you are my dh, you save them

Our city has a computer recycling program. They take old computers and computer accessories, working or not, and either repair them or harvest parts from them to repair others, then donate the repaired/rebuilt computers to schools and non-profit organizations.
Your chamber of commerce might be able to tell you if your area has such a program. I found ours by googling my city name + computer recycling.

I love building & tinkering with computers, so I stockpile parts & keep the working parts to put a computer back together. I teach my kids' friends how to do it if they are interested. One of her friends spent a day here last year learning the parts of the computer and how to put it all together correctly & safely (high school age). I had completely disassembled a desktop down to an empty case, and made her put it back together. It ran fine at the end of the day, so she was thrilled! It was fun if you're in the tech-y crowd.

I sometimes give a computer to a kid that doesn't have one if I have too many working units hanging around. I usually have 5-6 internet-capable computers together at a time. Broken or too-outdated parts get recycled, usable extra parts get stored, sold, or given away.

We just turned in a TON - a carload - of old electronics to the township on their electronic recycling day. Only one of us could fit in the car, that is how many computers, old TVs, old VCRs, cables, etc. we had.

Also, I think Costco and some office supply stores like maybe Office Max has drop offs.
