How do you reconcile Simple Living with garage sales? I am amazed at the people trying to simplify their life that buy piles of "stuff" at garage sales/thrift stores. Sometimes one man's trash is another man's treasure, but sometimes it's just junk, KWIM?

How do you keep yourself from buying something you don't need just because it is 25 cents?

It's hard not to get 10 of something because of the deal! I am learning to stop and re-think what I really NEED versus something cool or just cheap.

Slow progress!

My DH really struggles with this. Something that helps for us is asking ourselves a few questions. Do we really need it? Do we have something that already does that job? And where will we put it?

I was that person a few years ago, esp with the girls clothes and toys. So I stopped going to garage sales, for like a year, and decluttered my house, realizing that most of the stuff that I declutters was from GARAGE SALES! LOL

I go with a list, and that makes all the difference for me. I have a master list of all the things I would like to have to "complete" my house, including organizers, wall art (along with measurements), paint, what the kids need for their wardrobes, etc. I only buy it if its on the list and I know exactly where it will go when I get home. I walk away empty-handed often, but its gotten easier not to buy stuff I don't need because I LOVE the feeling of walking in the door and putting something right where it needs be and calling it done.

I am really bad at that because it is so cheap to get toys and clothes for the kids, but I don't buy unless it is really cheap!! My daughter fot a gerbil with all the stuff at a yeard sale this weekend for 10.00.

I just dont go to garage sales.

Sorry, but I find a lot of people just try to unload their junk onto others. If I'm really in need of something, I'd rather buy new (if its stuff like household appliances) or do without. I find nothing is ever that necessary of a "need"....
