I had to down size to a very small house recently. I have a daycare in my home and with alot of toys, crafts and whatever else in my house i'm crowded! I desperately need cheap and easy ideas on how to make my tiny house look clean by finding ways to store things and make it look less cluttered!! I hate having parents and company coming over and seeing my house looks messy because I have no idea where to put anything. Id love to hear if anyone has creative ideas or any advice for me! Thanks

First, you need to declutter and you'll find lots of stuff that you don't need. Go into a room and find the first area that catches your eye and starts there. If you don't use it, don't love, don't need it, doesn't make you happy or money, TOSS IT.

Other than that, I have TOTES everywhere. Its all I can do. My girls have the drawers in their room, Buddy has big totes that hold all his trains and tracks. I also utalize the underbed areas as well as much as possible, with the short flat totes that fit under there.

I definitely second the decluttering as well as the under-the-bed storage. Basically just think of any place that you can stick something that won't be seen, and find a way to make it organized! My house is pretty darn small, and I have learned to just not buy any sort of decor or anything unless I am prepared to get rid of something I already have and buy the new item to replace it. I know toys are a different story, though, especially if you're a babysitter. What if you started having "clean up" time before the kids all went home, and just put everything in totes and stuck them in a closet (until the next day) or under your couch? Or maybe find some cute baskets that you can slide under your coffee table and end tables. Maybe even just stacking baskets that you can stick in a corner? If you went with that idea, you could cover sturdy cardboard boxes with fabric that coordinates with your decor and make them nice looking, and that might be cheaper than baskets.

My house is pretty small as well, so I use a lot of totes also. As for ds playroom, I have the shelf toybox thing which comes in very well. Its amazing how much stuff you can fit on it. They're pretty expensive new, but I got mine off of Craigslist for only $20.

Mine looks a little like this one from Walmart. Walmart.com: Tot Tutors - Toy Organizer: Kids' & Teen Rooms

I use shelves and go up, make use of the verticle space as much as possble. For small items pick up a dresser, they can be for more than just clothing. If you have a large DVD collection take them out of their jackets and put into binders, same can be done with music cd's. I have an electronic inventory (use Excell spreadsheet) of these so I know where to look for the ones I want.

If you can fit it somewhere, combined function furnishing works good too. Make storage benches that can be used as seating. When the kids get ready to go home just open, drop in and close. For comfortable kid friendly seating use old crib mattresses as cushions on the bench. Fashion slip over covers from old crib sheets that can be taken off and washed.
