I watch these all the time and it just dawned on me to really pay attention and take notes on how they do things and their solutions to typical clutter problems. Here are a few I've noticed as of late:
1. Separate clutter into just a few different piles - and put the stuff into something. (A laundry basket, box or bin works well) Most commonly used categories are Keep, Toss, Donate. or Keep, Toss, Donate, Long-term Storage. Be brutal and realistic when making decisions. If you're sorting through kids toys, keep things that THEY play with, not things that YOU have an emotional attachment to.
2. Decorative boxes or baskets hide stored items while still being appealing to the eye. Tight on cash? Purchase cheap plastic boxes from the $1 store and wrap the outside in fabric that coordinates with your room, hot gluing it around the top, just below the lip. Add a pretty (and cheap) ribbon or decorative rope over the fabric edge to clean it up.. very cute, cheap (you can use small remnant scraps from the bargain bin) and easy to tie into a room's decor.
3. Two is better than one when it comes to decluttering. It's the "we don't need to keep those" or the "how long has it been since we've used this?" that helps so often when you're getting rid of things. Personally, having my DH de-clutter with me has helped me purge MUCH more than I would have done on my own. That is, of my stuff. I'll have to purge his junk when I'm alone, or the TOSS and DONATE baskets will be empty at the end.
If I come across more, I'll add them. Does anyone else have anything to add?
