Hubby works midnights, so it's just me and the kids. Nothing special planned.. i'll be making lasagna though.. And made each of the kids and hubby a vday card and got them each a bit of chocolate.. that's it.

My favourite (and very frugal) Valentine's dinner:

Toasted cheese hearts (cut out the hearts using a heart shaped cookie cutter) and Campbell's tomato soup.

It's red and white and cheap.

DH and I did this our first Valentine's together. We still talk about 6 years later. Unfortunately this year he's working and I'm in class, so a quick kiss at the door maybe all we can manage.

A spagetti dinner and a little red wine will be the course this year.

Dh is taking the day off so I can attend my sons party at school. I am the room mother but have to take the little ones with me and this time I just want to focus on the class!

I am going to make heart shaped pancakes for breakfast for the kids!

Making my own card for dh and kids.

This year I decided we will stay home and put together a romantic meal together for me my husband and include the kids....have a roast, mashed potatoes, green beans...crab legs for my the adults and my son...we love them. Then I will make a nice dessert and serve sparkling grape juice. My kids will think it is great.

We printed our Valentine's online and the kids colored them. Much cheaper and they were proud of the final result.

I am going to make heart shaped pancakes for the kids and then we got them each a little box of candy and a puzzle. I am going to make steak and shrimp for DH and I after the kids are in bed, maybe a glass of wine.

I'm making chocolate lollipops with leftover melting chocolate for the kids and a new book for each of them. DH are I are skipping gifts for each other and buying a $25 gift card to use on a date night in the future. We are having a "red meal" which the kids so excited about - red heart jello jigglers, red kool aid, spaghetti, red peppers and heart sugar cookies with red icing. Tasty, huh?

I love this book by Meg Cox called Traditions. It has cheap things in it - like making a poster for each kid that tells them how you love them vs. candy/gifts. I use this with the teachers too!

Here are a few of the ideas from her book:

· Book of love
o Keep a rotating book that each year members of the family write down loving things about one another
· Have a Heart Award
o Each member of the family gives awards to each other member for a special act of love or kindness
· What is sweet about you poster
o Using hearts have family members what is sweet about one another and attach to poster board & then display

Free (or nearly) and meaningful.
