Wow! This is such a hard question for me...
I agree with choosing the 50s (if I could have been a teenager), and the 80s...because life WAS alot less "technology based". I also (for a time) would've liked to live "across the field from the Ingalls", or in that era, or (currently) in an Amish community. I'm also drawn to "Midevil times", however I don't think I'd want to stay there for long!! (ha ha)
The great thing is, that we CAN still choose to live the "lifestyle" of our choice today, however, not in exactly the same way!! Medical advances, technology and medications would still be available, even to the Amish if needed, for example. We can choose to opt out of paying for cable, and spend family time playing cards and board games, like it was when I grew up. We can choose to live "off grid" too, for example (which is my dream) and in places where you don't have close neighbors checking out everything you do. There are alot of things we can do, and ways we can live, that CAN take you back to a simpler or more secure way of life....if you choose to do so.
I plan to do a paper on the lives of the Amish in school this Fall, and how they are able to live thier lives without all the conveniences alot of us take for granted every day. I envy them. Occasionally, we'll see Mennonites in our Walmart. They live across the border into Mexico. So many times I've just wanted to walk up to them and ask them questions about their lives. Apparently, they're not above going to Walmart for things!!
