Saw this on GMA this morning

Click on THIS LINK and then choose the first selection to the right of the screen ENTITLED: "Diane Sawyer's Life In Garbage"

Diane Sawyer definitely hit some pretty powerful points here. Really openned my eyes to what we are doing to our environment!

Little did I know that segment above was just a fragment of the show. They had an HOUR LONG show on 20/20 last night called : PLANET EARTH. (click on that link)

It's incredible what we can do to make a difference. Modifying our behavior to a small degree to save water, cut back on carbons in the air, reduce garbage in our landfills and to become more environmentally responsible. They give suggestions throughout the entire show. It's worth watching.

I for one, am inspired.

I ask that you please take the time to read this article and watch PLANET EARTH on 20/20.

I checked out the preview - wish I could get 20/20 here to have seen the whole thing! On the subject of small changes we all can make to save the planet:

Interestingly, I came across a new diaper this week called gDiapers. Does anyone use them? They are flushable! The absorbant diaper core is placed inside a waterproof liner (very cute!) and you can flush it down the toilet. That saves loads of landfill space - and disposable diapers take up to 500 years to degrade, so with the few thousand diapers you go through per kid, it makes a big impact.

I haven't seen anything like them on sale in Germany yet but I will try them out when I fly to Portland this summer. they're availble at all sorts of places - Fred Meyer, Whole Foods, etc. Check out the website if you're interested: gDiapers - Home.

By the way, we live in an older home and have been advised to be careful with the pipes (i.e. no flushing tampons, etc.) so we wouldn't be able to flush these ones either. But I wrote and asked about it, and they said you can of course throw them away like disposables, but they don't have any plastic so they degrade much more quickly and also take up less landfill space. I thought that was a pretty good solution that I would still feel better about than Pampers!!

Thanks for the clip -- very much an eye opener! I've always wondered about those plastic bottles ...

And GDiapers! I've signed up for their website and will keep that in mind for when the baby comes in June!

I will check out both the article and the gDiapers. I am almost done with my last child in diapers, but every little bit can help...
Thanks!

I saw most of the 20/20 last night. We have been doing some of the changes they suggested. We've changed about 1/2 of our light bulbs to CFL's, take shorter showers (7-8 minutes) and turn off the water when we brush the teeth. There is still so much that can be done, though. I have started looking for cloth bags to take to the store, instead of using the plastic or paper and I would really like to get some solar panels, even if we only get enough power to run our DVD player or laptop, it will help. One viable change for our country would be to allow non-THC Hemp to be grown, which can be used for paper and to make particle board, in place of using trees. It can be used for fuel, cloth, and just about anything you can think of. Non-THC, means that it cannot get you high. Hemp is easily and quickly grown, which makes it a perfect renewable resource. It's even edible, with it's oil & seeds being one of the few plants that are considered a perfect food.

Thanks for the link to the gDiapers. I checked out the website and will discuss this with DH to see if it is something we will do.
