I have 2 leather coats from my high school days that my parents spent a lot of money on. I was going to consign them but they need cleaning and the consignment shop is very picky about that. I checked out the price of having them professionally cleaned and its about 35-50 a coat! So, should I just donate them as is, try to clean them myself and see if the consignment shop will take them or what? Let me know what you gals think. Thanks

Well.. how old are you? How old are the jackets in other words.. If they're an older style, consignment shops may not take them as they probably wouldn't sell. I'd donate them personally...

I think they're 12-15 yrs. old. One is in good condition (not trendy, classic leather jacket) and one is green and hooded. I think I'll try to clean up the first one and see if they'll take it.

You could always bring them in to the consignment shop and ask their opinion on whether it's worth it for you to pay to have them cleaned. Tell them how much it'll cost you to get them cleaned and see what they say...

I'd probably try Craigslist first. . .my experiences w/ consignemnt of adult clothes haven't been that great. Also, we've had several leather things cleaned and quite often the cleaner smell hasn't gone away for a while- that may make it harder to sell. My thought is that is you have them cleaned and then consign that you wouldn't make much after the store takes their cut. But- it never hurts to ask their opinion.

I would personally try Craigslist first, but that's JMO

Good luck!!

I would say Craigslist too. That works great for me and you don't have to split the profit with a shop. I wouldn't set the price too high, though, if you want to get rid of them. A little more than you think you would make at the consignment shop.

I wouldn't waste the money cleaning them because I don't think leather is "in" right now so I think they'd have a hard time selling them (if they even accepted them) and even if they did sell them, I can't imagine it'd be for more than $50. But, I do like the idea of taking them to the store first to get their opinion and see if they'd even accept them.
